The Mohawk Valley Peace Coalition and Pax Christi of the Mohawk Valley joined forces from 1 to 2 p.m. for a vigil protesting the second anniversary of the war on Iraq. It is one of 152 vigils taking place across the country, said coalition member Tracy Taylor.
One of the protesters was 87-year-old Kate Oser of Clinton, who was wearing a shirt that read, "War is not the answer." Oser said she has been protesting since Italian dictator Benito Mussolini invaded Ethiopia in 1935 and has protested every major war in her lifetime except World War II.
"If we don't (protest), the rest of the world will think we don't give a damn about the rest of the world," Oser said.Taylor said the negative responses she received -- including threatening gestures -- when she first began protesting the war in Iraq have largely abated.
"The tide has really turned," she said. "People aren't afraid to show their support for peace." Sandy Scofield talks with Dorothy Fannin, obscured at right, while protesting the war in Iraq Saturday in New Hartford.
