NYT: Bush's Re-election Lifts Circulation at Liberal Magazines

Sheepish though they may be about profiting from George Bush's re-election, some liberal magazines have seen subscriptions rise during the recent political season.

"We had a huge spike in orders beginning the day after the election," said Art Stupar, vice president for circulation at The Nation, which comes out weekly. "In fact, our Web site, in the week following the election, generated 2,600 subscriptions." Typically, The Nation gets no more than 500 subscriptions a week through its Web site, he said.

Overall subscriptions to The Nation reached 184,000 at the end of December, up 24,000 from the previous year; they have doubled since 2000, with a spurt in 2003, when the war in Iraq got under way. "You could say that all the way through, for four years, we've benefited from the follies of the Bush administration," Mr. Stupar said.

Similarly, at The Progressive, a monthly, paid subscriptions grew 12 percent, to 64,000, over 2004, and have risen 72 percent since President Bush first took office. The American Prospect, another monthly, experienced a 27 percent increase in paid subscriptions last year, from 45,568 to 60,189.

1. I wonder if this is true.
We canceled the NYT, the SF Chron AND The Nation because of their miserable coverage of election "glitches". Why pay people to call me a dissident?

Not familiar with The Progressive or with The American Prospect.

4. Sometimes I feel the Nation is a little shy to take on controversy
But overall, they do a great job of formulating liberal positions.
Other great magazines not Mentioned...."In these Times." I hope it still exists...I am lucky to have enough time to complete my Nation..I am and always will be a Nation subscriber, even if they are only 90% perfect...
In These Times has lots of Moxie and never fear for a fight, along with Mother Jones...I think Mother Jones comes closest to muckracking, but with facts and research as its shield.

8. Wow, this part is interesting...
But this year, conservative magazines have also enjoyed a bump. The American Spectator saw an 18 percent rise in subscriptions, said Alfred Regnery, its publisher. ...

(snip)

The National Review had a 20 percent jump in subscriptions last year, closing out 2004 with 173,815 subscribers.

But if their man won, how do publishers on the right understand the boom? "Hate sells," quipped Jack Fowler, associate publisher at The National Review.

HATE SELLS? :wtf: I guess he's being funny, but that struck me as bizarre.

WRT the bump in liberal mag subs, I know after the election I subscribed to the Iconoclast (which has turned itself into quite the interesting little political left-leaning weekly) and the Texas Observer, which is FANTASTIC.
