More chief information officers in the St. Louis area plan to reduce staff in the second quarter than hire new staff, according to a new survey by Robert Half International released Monday.

Of 100 local chief information officers surveyed, 15 percent said they expected to reduce staff, while 14 percent said they planned to add staff. The remainder said they expected no change in hiring.

Katherine Spencer Lee, executive director of Robert Half Technology, said companies are cautious not to expand their IT departments prematurely and still bring in workers to handle short-term projects and high workloads.

About 8 percent of are chief financial officers surveyed said they planned to add accounting and finance staff, while 1 percent said they planned to cut staff. The net 7 percent increase is one point higher than the national average of 6 percent, Robert Half said.

3. Cheaper to hire "consultants" on a piece work basis and pay on a 1099
then to hire full time employees with health care and retirement.

This was predicted when the Health Insurance Mafia (with help from Newt Gingrich) killed Hillary's Health Plan in 1994 -- and is also the issue with GM's massive layoffs.

13. I've been a consultant for about 20 years and it's no better. Unless
you are not a US citizen and want to work for peanuts. But we citizens don't get a chance to undercut their prices.
