US gets WTO to probe EU customs procedures

GENEVA: The World Trade Organisation (WTO) on Monday set up a panel to look into European Union customs procedures that the US says hinder its exports to the 25-nation grouping.

The three-member panel will have six months to come up with a ruling in the dispute, centred on US complaints that EU member states categorise imported goods differently, leading to variations in tariffs imposed on the same product.

The EU insists that its harmonised customs rules ensure uniform treatment of imports across all member countries.

It argues that the US has failed to produce any concrete examples of problems encountered by its exporters despite formally asking US companies to register any complaints they might have.
