Protecting environment pays off, experts say
http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-payoff21.html

What is a honeybee worth? A wetland? A fish or a bird? A human life?

Ecologists and health advocates are assigning dollar values to the environment as they argue for its protection and enhancement. Budget-minded governments make this a practical approach, if sometimes a distasteful one.

"You can't have a healthy economy without a healthy environment," says John Kostyack of the National Wildlife Federation. He cited recent studies showing that "an investment in conservation today really pays off in the long run -- and the payoff is in terms of both quality of life and dollar and cents."

Why pay $9 million for a barrier in the Chicago Sanitary & Ship Canal to keep Asian carp out of Lake Michigan? To protect the Great Lakes' annual $4.5 billion fishing industry, environmentalists say.

1. This is news?!
If you don't have natural resources to provide us with our basic needs, and an ozone to protect us from harsh climate, it's not a matter of quality of life. It's a matter of life itself.

2. A good example is
the former soviet states. One reason their economy was so poor was that it took more money to solve the problem (the effects of enviro-degradation) after it became a problem, than it took to prevent the problem to begin with.
Conservatism is the dark black of fear.

3. Butbutbut . . . JOBS!
I find it rather distasteful as well, but when the pro-development folks start waving around numbers of created jobs, it will be useful to have something to say back. Something that is besides "Uh huh, 60,000 new jobs, huh? You realize, of course, that there is no evidence to back up that assertion and is just a number you pulled out of your ass?"

4. If the world is ending...
What's the harm in "using it all up"?
or
God put it all here for our use...

I honestly believe that this "corruption of Christianity" is part of the cause.
