Bush Defends Intelligence As 'Darn Good'
President Bush defended the quality of intelligence he receives as "darn good" despite an uproar over disputed reports that Iraq tried to buy uranium from Africa for nuclear weapons.

Bush said Monday he remained convinced that Saddam Hussein was attempting to develop a weapons program that threatened the world and justified the United States going to war against Iraq. <cut

"When all is said and done the people of the United States will realize that Saddam Hussein had a weapons program," Bush said.

"I think I get is darn good intelligence and the speeches I have given are backed by good intelligence," Bush said. However, the administration has acknowledged the uncertainty of remarks Bush made in his January State of the Union address about Iraq's alleged attempts to buy uranium in Iraq.

Have we ever been given solid, verifiable evidence for ANY of *'s claims that got us into this war? The media is ever so carefully staying away from the "they can strike us within 45 minutes" claim, they've forgotten about the missing WMD and the "moving chemical labs". To make matters worse, the lead story on NPR today is about the Davis recall effort. The headline includes a GOP soundbite: "he's never admitted responsibility for anything that's gone wrong"! Gee-who does THAT sound like?

It is so very reassuring to me to know that the same words Bush uses to describe the intelligence that caused us to lunch an attack on a nation are the same words I use to describe my morning cup of coffee.

On the plus side, he did not use the occasion to dare Iraqis to kill our solders and that is a darn good thing.

You beat me to it CJ. I lived in Texas for a short time many years ago. Darn good was usually reserved to describe someones fried chicken or potatoe (with an e for Danny Quayle) salad. However to send someones spouse, sibling or child to die based on "darn good" rather than unquestionable intelligence shows a serious lack of same.

47. Well, to be safe ...
... I should probably photograph my Jello and glass jars and then film the destruction of the jars and people eating the Jello. I'm a bit concerned, however, about actually driving my car since the Busholinis will want proof that's how the gasoline was used. It is, you see, a "precursor" to Molotov cocktails. (They'll probably find the Jello packages in my trash as 'evidence' of my program for manufacturing a Weapon of Mass Digestion. Sigh.)

Imagine the millions of US households, every one with all the precursors to Molotov cocktails! Terrorists all!

25. Admittedly...
I'm developing a WMD program. The first part of the development process, get lots of notecards. The second part, paperclips and file folders. If we can find note cards, paperclips and file folders in Iraq, I'm pretty certain we have the evidence we need to prove that he was developing a program that would be used to eventually create WMDs.

50. he gave the head bob at the end
....like he used to do in the debates.

THE PRESIDENT: Yes, Dana, one last question.

Q Mr. President, back on the question of Iraq, and that specific line that has been in question --

THE PRESIDENT: Can you cite the line? (Laughter.)

Q I could, if you gave me some time.

THE PRESIDENT: When I gave the speech, the line was relevant.

Q So even though there has been some question about the intelligence -- the intelligence community knowing beforehand that perhaps it wasn't, you still believe that when you gave it --

THE PRESIDENT: Well, the speech that I gave was cleared by the CIA. And, look, the thing that's important to realize is that we're constantly gathering data. Subsequent to the speech, the CIA had some doubts. But when I gave the -- when they talked about the speech and when they looked at the speech, it was cleared. Otherwise, I wouldn't have put it in the speech. I'm not interested in talking about intelligence unless it's cleared by the CIA. And as Director Tenet said, it was cleared by the CIA.

The larger point is, and the fundamental question is, did Saddam Hussein have a weapons program? And the answer is, absolutely. And we gave him a chance to allow the inspectors in, and he wouldn't let them in. And, therefore, after a reasonable request, we decided to remove him from power, along with other nations, so as to make sure he was not a threat to the United States and our friends and allies in the region. I firmly believe the decisions we made will make America more secure and the world more peaceful.
