White House used Florida hurricane to boost election prospects
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=b18c4b6e167643c1

Big News Network.com Wednesday 23rd March, 2005 (UPI)

E-mails released by Florida Gov. Jeb Bush's office show the presidential election campaign was a factor in hurricane relief efforts last year.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Wednesday a consultant suggested Bush's re-election staff be brought into Florida to minimize any negative hurricane effects.

Two weeks later, a Florida official said the Federal Emergency Management Agency was handing out assistance money to everyone who needed it without asking for much information of any kind.

8. Here's the story from the Sun-Sentinel
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 02:08 AM by Lone_Star_Dem
<snip>
The records are contained in hundreds of pages of Gov. Jeb Bush's storm-related e-mails initially requested by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel Oct. 13.

The governor's office finally released the documents Friday, after threat of a lawsuit by the newspaper.

Democrats in Washington said the records confirm suspicions that the federal government used the hurricanes to funnel money to Florida, a key battleground state in the presidential election. "They weren't really asking for information, yet they were just doling out this money like it was Christmas," said Lale Mamaux, spokeswoman for U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Boca Raton.

13. DIdn't someone say that FEMA is now part of Homeland Sec. Budget?
I imagine there will be a lot more heavily-funded, "God"-created Natural Disasters in Florida the coming years. I remember watching on TV last Fall, as the News said Shrub was signing over Millions in FEMA funds to Jeb (HIS BROTHER!!!) in Florida. That happened FOUR times! Every time I heard the MILLIONS word, and Shrub-to-Jeb passing of money, I went uh-huh... I'm not surprised to hear now that a lot of that money essentially disappeared...not doubt to help "fund" the dubious Election.

19. We Got FEMA after the election
I had to fight for some assistance. I guess they looked at our voter's registration and said "She would never vote for us. We'll let her wait." I had to send 5 different letters and then we got the "denial" overturned. And yes, now our insurance has dropped us as well.

33. I know that feeling
The house we were renting in Palm Bay was destroyed by hurricanes Francis and then Jeanne. I let my girlfriend make the FEMA claim to get some relocation assistance, since she still has an R on her voter registration (she hasn't changed it since Reagan's 2nd term, but doesn't vote R anymore...didn't vote Ronnie on term 2). I figured the same thing, that claims would go smoother for the republicans. They gave us around $450 without many questions at all.

The disgusting thing is the amount of money that went to Miami-Dade county, despite the fact that NO hurricanes came anywhere near that county. That was where the vote-pandering money was handed out to people. I read an article where some people reported no home damage, but somehow the hurricanes damaged their wide-screen TV (which, of course they never had). And people were smashing the windows of their cars, and pouring water onto their couches, etc.

Ridge's get-togethers with Republican strategists Frank Luntz and Bill McInturff during a period the secretary was saying his agency was playing no role in Bush's re-election campaign were revealed in daily appointment calendars obtained by the AP under the Freedom of Information Act.

22. Really, remember how Kerry lied about Bush not getting OBL at Tora Bora!
Oops -

Report says bin Laden eluded U.S. forces in Tora Bora

WASHINGTON (AP) — A commander for Osama bin Laden during Afghanistan's war with the Soviet Union who helped the al-Qaeda leader escape American forces at Tora Bora is being held by U.S. authorities, a government document says.

-snip-
President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney asserted during the presidential election that commanders did not know whether bin Laden was at Tora Bora when U.S. and allied Afghan forces attacked there in December 2001. They dismissed assertions by Sen. John Kerry, the Democratic presidential nominee, that the military had missed a chance to capture or kill bin Laden while al-Qaeda made a last stand in the mountainous area along the Pakistan border.

The document, provided to The Associated Press in response to a Freedom of Information request, says the detainee held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, "assisted in the escape of Osama bin Laden from Tora Bora." While not identified by name or nationality, he is described as being "associated with" al-Qaeda and having called for a holy war against the United States.

-snip-
The document is what the Pentagon calls a "summary of evidence" and was presented against one of 558 prisoners at Guantanamo Bay on Dec. 14 for a hearing to determine whether the prisoner was correctly held as an "enemy combatant." The assertion about his efforts and bin Laden's escape is made as a statement of fact; it does not indicate how the information was obtained.

That's What I'm Talking About

>snip< Note the gruff looking fellow and his shattered home. Note George W. with his arm slung around him like they were old college roommates. And most importantly, note the somewhat faded American flag.

Ask yourself, why the fuck is there an American flag in this photo of an apparent moment of spontaneous compassion?

Why? 'Cause Karl Rove made damn sure that someone is around to set-dress every photograph that comes out of Florida over the next few days. 'Cause the only thing better than a beatific-looking Bush mourning with his fellow man, is a beatific-looking Bush doing so with an American flag.

If you Americans vote for this fellah because of kind of proganda, you are falling for the same kind of game the original Propaganda Minister ran back in the 30's and 40's for his beloved Fuhrer. Remember; Bush invaded a sovereign nation for a reason that was overwhelmingly false, started a war that has cost over a thousand American lives, killed over 10 000 Iraqi civilians and turned a majority of world opinion against the United States. But half of the American population is still thinking of voting for him.

Here he was tossing money around and posing for photo ops like mad right before the election, in a state that was undoubtedly going to be a close call. Meanwhile, in southern MD, people are still hurting from when Isobel struck in 1993. Of course, MD was a rethuglican lost cause.
