Court prevents release of most September 11 emergency calls
http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/03/24/sept11.tapes/index.html

(CNN) -- The emergency phone calls made by people trapped inside the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, need not be released to the public, a New York court ruled Thursday.

The New York State Court of Appeals declined to grant the wish of September 11 families who joined in a lawsuit seeking release of all tapes and transcripts of calls made from inside the Twin Towers to 9-1-1 operators.

Although 9-1-1 calls might contain previously undisclosed factual information about what was happening inside the towers, the judges wrote, "it is normal to be appalled if intimate moments in the life of one's deceased child, wife, husband, or other close relative become publicly known, and an object of idle curiosity or a source of titillation."

Referring to the calls, they said, "Those words are likely to include expression of the terror and agony the callers felt and of their deepest feelings about what their lives and their families meant to them. The grieving family of such a caller -- or the caller, if he or she survived -- might reasonably be deeply offended at the idea that these words could be heard on television or read in The New York Times."

No families came forward to oppose the release.

That last line might go over the 4 paragraph rule Mods. However, I think it is the most important line of the story.

1. Isn't it the families of the deceased requesting this info?
I don't think all the conversations should be made public in the NY Times either, but if it was the families that were requesting the info, wouldn't it be realesed to THEM? It would them be their decision to release it to the press or not.

3. and people wonder why those pesky 'conspiracy' theories persist
gee, seems the families of the victims would like to hear the calls.

Why not just release them?

Holding them only gives creedance to those 'other' theories about what really happened that day.

6. "No families came forward to oppose the release." - more COVER UP
i guess it would be hard to explain why the FUCK folks in the 2nd tower to be attacked were told it was SAFE to go back to work, among other things, eh?

8. I worked in 911 communications
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 06:21 PM by Corgigal
for over 8 years. We had to release information. We released a tape of a woman live on the phone being shot numerous times in her home. One woman fighting off a rapist and other horrific calls.

Something is wrong with this information not be released. They also release the black box recordings from airline accidents. I never heard of any agency not having to release this information. It is public domain, you expect no privacy on a 911 call.

9. Yes, this sounds odd
I remember a couple of years ago, a Florida (I think) woman drove off the road into a canal - she called 911 from her car and they played the tape on the news. This poor terrified woman who wasn't sure where on the road she'd been and was trying to relay information and get help while water poured in. The last thing you heard was a sort of strangled scream and a rush of water. She was dead when they finally found her.

It was HORRIFYING. And it played on the damn nightly news. I'm sure the 9/11 calls are horrifying as well but why the secrecy?
