Six mainly preventable diseases cause 73 percent of child deaths -WHO
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L24587046.htm

LONDON, March 25 (Reuters) - Six mainly preventable diseases account for 73 percent of child deaths each year, the World Health Organisation said on Friday.

Pneumonia accounts for 19 percent of the under-fives who die, followed by diarrhoea, pre-term delivery, malaria, blood infection and lack of oxygen at birth.

"New estimates show that worldwide more than seven in 10 of the 10.6 million annual deaths in children younger than 5 years are attributable to six causes, and that four communicable disease categories account for more than half of all child deaths," said Robert Black, of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore.

The figures compiled by Black and his colleagues are based on data from publications and continuing studies and were published in The Lancet medical journal.

1. Very sad. All due to poor health care...easily remedied with minimal

effort and moderate amount of money. I am sure the US budget cuts to women's health care around the world upped this number since 2000.
"Pro-life", "Compassionate Conservative", my ass.

EDIT: I heard Al Franken talking about the mosquito netting that could prevent the malaria. They cost only 50 cents per net....but that is alot of money in the areas where they are needed the most.

2. The pneumonia surprises me...
... I assumed diarrheal disease was the leading cause. Makes one ill to think of waste in the U.S. How many lives could have been saved for the cost of the hoopla surrounding the Schiavo LEGISLATIVE fiasco, add the cost of * returning to D.C...

Yes, I agree with you.
I don't recall any members of the Republican leadership in the House or the Senate standing up and saying that there were thousands of people dying due to entirely preventable causes. I don't recall them ever lamenting prenatal care and well-baby care are not universally funded (not even in the U.S.!).

But I've heard them and Bush get all emotional about the INHERITANCE TAX. Yeah, you mustn't inconvenience Paris Hilton, but there's no time for the thousands of young people dying. Some culture of life.

5. The only thing the christian right cares about these "feriners"
is that their missionaries are allowed to reach them and occasionally provide some pittance of physical support and a whole lot of spiritual support (they don't understand that any spiritual support without a real effort to provide physical support is just sheer hypocrisy, and those feriners know it. If only they would read the Gospel they would know this).
Its kind of a "faith-based" initiative; they say "don't have any of my taxpayer money go to buy 5 cent fluid and electrolyte solution or 30 cent antibiotics to allow feriners with diarrhea to make it thru their illness, or 50 cents to buy malaria nets. However, I'll feel real good to give $10 per month to Feed the Children."

The problem with this equation is that, just like any domestic faith based initiative, the incredibly small amount of real tithing and charity given from americans, especially from the christian right hypocrites, will take care of a small proportion that the government services can provide.

Disclaimer: Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against charities like Feed the Children. I'm not critizing them, I'm criticizing the mindset of the conservatives.
