Cost of war creates uncertainty about Army's tuition program
Help is on the way?

Tuition money for servicemembers still could be in jeopardy despite officials’ announcement this week that funds for the military’s free tuition program will be available for the next term.

That’s because the U.S. Army has no money budgeted for the last two terms of the fiscal year, which includes late summer and fall classes in South Korea, according to Dr. Gary Hunt, director of the University of Maryland’s college program for the U.S. military in South Korea and Singapore.

“It has never been like this before,” said Hunt, who has run the program from Yongsan for seven years. “I would hate to think we’re going to be doing this every semester.”

Military officials worldwide have been grappling with budget crises because of the cost of keeping troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. In South Korea, the military has postponed barracks improvements, struggled to collect trash on time and run out of money to help with local moves.

1. Well
They might learn evolution.

I always thought the Army wanted an educated soldier. Oh wait, Bush....

2. I can see it now:
Potential recruitee: What? No college money?

Recruiter: We've got these great snappy uniforms! You'll get laid ten times more than that rich college puke.

3. But if you agree to stay in the infantry and deploy, again
we'll let you visit the hospital if you pay us $75 per month.

What a deal! Especially for families who can't afford health care once in the civilian sector!

4. We need to tell people about this, LOUDLY!
That "money for college" promise is the single LARGEST carrot that the military dangles in front of potential recruit's noses!

Now they have NO $$ budgeted for the program? What will happen to recruiting #s if poor kids hear about THIS?

We need to paste this info on every recruiting office, and get leaflets into every High School!

STARVE the BEAST!

My SO does some work with HS kids, I'm gonna run off a few copies of this so she can start getting word out.

5. Isn't the army obligated?
That's part of the deal -- low pay & college tuition.

6. They are also obligated to defend and support the Constitution.
They are OBLIGATED to disobey any ILLEGAL orders.

The VA Healthcare system is LEGALLY OBLIGATED to do LOTS of things, but it's currently being strangled in its sickbed by BushCo.

"Legal Obligations? That kind of thinking is SOOOO pre-9/11!"

7. This is a separate program from the contractural tuition guarantee
That one provides tuition money the service member can use on return to civilian life, and its provisions are guaranteed by law.

This program allows the service member to take courses on-base (when available) or on the internet during active service.

Still recruiters do dangle this as an added advantage for prospective enlistees.

8. The rich don't care about public education
and they give less of a shit about enlisted personal. 400 billion dollars for our military and we can't even pay college tuition for those that served! Disgraceful!
