Government now says battle not a major incident

Baghdad -- New details from an intense battle between insurgents and Iraqi police commandos supported by U.S. forces cast doubt Thursday on Iraqi government claims that 85 insurgents had been killed at what was described as a clandestine training camp.

Accounts of the fighting continued to suggest that a major battle involving dozens of insurgents had occurred Tuesday on the eastern shore of Lake Tharthar, about 50 miles northwest of Baghdad. But two U.S. military officials said Thursday that no bodies had been found by American troops who arrived later at the scene. A spokesman for the Iraqi Interior Ministry, meanwhile, said he presumed the death toll was accurate, but he played down the scope of the fighting.

"I wouldn't call it a major incident," said the spokesman, Sabar Kadhim. Its significance, he said, was that it was "the first major operation" to be conceived and executed by the nascent Iraqi security forces with U.S. soldiers in a supporting role.

Iraqi security forces have been engaged in several fierce battles this week. In the city of Rabia near the Syrian border Thursday, Iraqi police mistook Iraqi soldiers for insurgents and opened fire.

3. Insurgents Control Raided Iraq Camp -- AFP
Edited on Fri Mar-25-05 07:28 AM by Tace
SAMARRA, Iraq (AFP) -- Mar. 24, 2005 -- UP to 40 fighters were seen today at a Iraq lakeside training camp attacked by US and Iraqi forces a day before and said they had never left, an AFP correspondent who visited the site said.

The correspondent, who went with other journalists to the camp at Lake Tharthar, 200km north of Baghdad, said he saw 30 to 40 fighters there.

The remains of three burnt vehicles were seen on a dusty road leading to the camp in the village of Ain al-Hilwa. A few mud huts were partly destroyed and a few big craters gouged the ground.

One of the fighters, who called himself Mohammed Amer and claimed to belong to the Secret Islamic Army, said they had never left the base.

He also said only 11 of his comrades were killed in airstrikes on the site.

Lebanon Bomb Blast Kills Three

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Three people were killed and several more wounded early on Wednesday when a bomb exploded at a commercial center in a Christian town north of the Lebanese capital Beirut, police and local television said.

Television footage showed the roof of the center in the coastal town of Kaslik had collapsed and emergency services workers were searching through the rubble for other victims.
Police said blast had been caused by a bomb, but gave no more details.
It is the second explosion in a Christian area of the country in five days.

'the first major operation' to be conceived and executed by the nascent Iraqi security forces with U.S. soldiers in a supporting role."

I think that tells us just about all we need to know. It takes years to build an effective fighting force. Good thing we dismantled the Iraqi military, eh? And why did we do that?

Oh yeah, the Neokooks were afraid they might get in the way of their privatization agenda.

8. How did they know it was a training camp?
On NPR it was reported that they found two weapons and a kevlar vest. Hence, it was a training camp.

11. I thought the story smelled fishy...
Reading it in the newspaper, it did seem awfully glib and canned...all of a sudden, the Iraqi "government" comes up with this crack commando team, who just jumps in and wipes out a "nest of insurgents," with nary a scratch to themselves?

Yeah, right.

"Body counts 'corrected'," check

Say, when does William Westmoreland come out and waggle his bushy eyebrows? And who's going to play the Nixon?
