http://news.tbo.com/news/MGBHH2NWP6E.html

<snip>
PLANT CITY - State agriculture officials have dispatched a team of veterinarians and inspectors to test farm animals that may be linked to life- threatening cases of kidney failure among children and at least one adult who attended recent fairs in Orange and Hillsborough counties.
<snip>

<snip>
All the patients with the potentially deadly syndrome had contact with livestock at the fairs.
<snip>

<snip>
The state Department of Health on Wednesday issued an alert along the Interstate 4 and Interstate 75 corridors, warning of the potential for children who had visited petting zoos at the fairs to develop hemolytic uremic syndrome.

The condition begins with diarrhea and can progress to kidney failure.

4. Thanks... this doesn't look good does it?
Especially given the fact that our government is now so secretive. I guess that until it becomes "IN YOUR FACE" the public will not be informed?

Avian flu in Florida. And to think we've heard nothing about this... just Schiavo.

3. Testing
This is not something I know much about but I think it can be difficult to identify, so a lot depends on who is doing the testing. Also the article you cite could be wrong about that. I just found one reference to them testing and finding it.

I've never heard of HUS caused by a virus rather than a bacteria, but on the other hand, although I am an ex-epidemiologist, I'm out of my depth on E-Coli and HUS.
