Will a British divorcee cost 'Wolfie' his job?
---------------------------
From SHARON CHURCHER and ANNETTE WITHERIDGE
---------------------------
The appointment of George Bush's leading hawk as head of the World Bank was heading for a crisis over his relationship with a senior British employee.

Influential members of staff at the international organisation have complained to its board that Paul Wolfowitz, a married father of three, is so besotted with Oxford-educated Shaha Riza he cannot be impartial.

Extraordinarily, they claim she played a key role in pushing the 61-year-old Pentagon official into the Iraq War. And the row comes amid claims that Wolfowitz's wife Clare once warned George Bush of the threat to national security any infidelity by her husband could cause.

A British citizen - at 51, eight years younger than Wolfowitz's wife - Ms Riza grew up in Saudi Arabia and was passionately committed to democratising the Middle East when she allegedly began to date Wolfowitz.

6. Wow! I'm sure the impression in the press has been that he's divorced --
from the article:

"She also refused to confirm her marital status - reports of his appointment repeatedly describe Wolfowitz as divorced but The Mail on Sunday has been unable to find any records. Asked if she is separated or divorced, Clare replied: 'That's my business.'"

Who would ever have pegged Wolfy a womanizer???

12. Wow, such a scandal
According to the article, they are at least "separated" but it was this bit that piqued my interest:
Downing Street 'furious' at nomination

Wolfowitz became known around the world as one of the fiercest proponents of invasion of Iraq. The Mail on Sunday has learned that Downing Street is "furious" about his nomination, fearing his hardline attitude could alienate large sections of the international community.

But it is his tangled private life that could stop him taking up the World Bank post.

Critics say it would be impossible for Wolfie - as he is nicknamed by Bush - to make independent decisions when his lover, who works on Middle Eastern and North African issues, is so committed to overthrowing Middle Eastern regimes.

"His womanising has come home to roost," a Washington insider said. "Paul was a foreign policy hawk long before he met Shaha but it doesn't look good to be accused of being under the thumb of your mistress."

He's certainly no Rhett Butler, as she is no Scarlett O'Hara, herself!
There's someone for everyone, I suppose:

30. Shaha Riza of the US National Endowment for Democracy
Immediately before joining the World Bank Shaha Riza worked at the US National Endowment for Democracy where she set up and led the Endowment’s Middle East Programs.

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a private, nonprofit organization created in 1983 to strengthen democratic institutions around the world through nongovernmental efforts. The Endowment is governed by an independent, nonpartisan board of directors. With its annual congressional appropriation, it makes hundreds of grants each year to support prodemocracy groups in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and the former Soviet Union.
http://www.ned.org/about/about.html

..... in one of his major foreign policy addresses, President Reagan proposed an initiative "to foster the infrastructure of democracy--the system of a free press, unions, political parties, universities--which allows a people to choose their own way, to develop their own culture, to reconcile their own differences through peaceful means." He noted that the American Political Foundation would soon begin a study "to determine how the U.S. can best contribute--as a nation--to the global campaign for democracy now gathering force." Delivered to a packed Parliamentary chamber in Britain's Westminster Palace, the Reagan speech would prove to be one of the central contributions to the establishment of a U.S. democracy foundation.

The American Political Foundation's study was funded by a $300,000 grant from the Agency for International Development(AID) and it became known as "The Democracy Program." Its executive board consisted of a broad cross-section of participants in American politics and foreign policy making. The Democracy Program recommended establishment of a bipartisan, private, non-profit corporation to be known as the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).

Getting Organized
On the day the Senate approved the conference report, articles of incorporation were filed in the District of Columbia on behalf of the National Endowment for Democracy. The Endowment was established as a nonprofit organization under section 501c (3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code.

NED's original Board of Directors, limited to three three-year terms of service, included party activists, representatives of the U.S. labor, business and education communities, foreign policy specialists, and two members of Congress. Following a brief stint by Congressman Fascell as acting chairman, the Endowment appointed as its first permanent Chairman John Richardson, a former Assistant Secretary of State with many years of involvement in private organizations involved in international affairs. For President, the Board chose Carl Gershman, previously the Senior Counselor to the U.S. Representative to the United Nations.

NED's creation was soon followed by establishment of the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE), the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI), and the National Republican Institute for International Affairs (later renamed the International Republican Institute or "IRI"), which joined the Free Trade Union Institute (FTUI) as the four affiliated institutions of the Endowment. (FTUI was later reorganized as the American Center for International Labor Solidarity, also known as the “Solidarity Center.”) This structure had been recommended by the Democracy Program for three basic reasons: first, because of the wide recognition of the parent bodies of these new entities as national institutions with a public character, an important asset for this non-governmental foundation; second, because they represent sectors of political life fundamental to any strong democracy; and third, to insure political balance. The Endowment would serve as the umbrella organization through which these four groups and an expanding number of other private sector groups would receive funding to carry out programs abroad.
http://www.ned.org/about/nedhistory.html

Since its inception, the NED and its affiliates have been mired in controversy in the US itself as well as abroad. Amongst its strongest supporters in the US is the Heritage Foundation of Washington DC, a conservative think tank, which played an active role in influencing the policies of the Reagan and Bush Administrations.
http://www.saag.org/papers2/paper115.html

Remarks by the President at the 20th Anniversary of the National Endowment for Democracy
United States Chamber of Commerce
November 6, 2003
Securing democracy in Iraq is the work of many hands. American and coalition forces are sacrificing for the peace of Iraq and for the security of free nations. Aid workers from many countries are facing danger to help the Iraqi people. THENATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR DEMOCRACY IS PROMOTING WOMEN'S RIGHTS, AND TRAINING IRAQI JOURNALISTS, AND TEACHING THE SKILLS OF POLITICAL PARTICIPATION. Iraqis, themselves -- police and borders guards and local officials -- are joining in the work and they are sharing in the sacrifice.

This is a massive and difficult undertaking -- it is worth our effort, it is worth our sacrifice, because we know the stakes. The failure of Iraqi democracy would embolden terrorists around the world, increase dangers to the American people, and extinguish the hopes of millions in the region. Iraqi democracy will succeed -- and that success will send forth the news, from Damascus to Teheran -- that freedom can be the future of every nation. (Applause.) The establishment of a free Iraq at the heart of the Middle East will be a watershed event in THE GLOBAL DEMOCRATIC REVOLUTION. (Applause.)
<snip>
The advance of freedom is the calling of our time; it is the calling of our country. From the Fourteen Points to the Four Freedoms, to the Speech at Westminster, America has put our power at the service of principle. We believe that liberty is the design of nature; we believe that liberty is the direction of history. We believe that human fulfillment and excellence come in the responsible exercise of liberty. And we believe that freedom -- the freedom we prize -- is not for us alone, it is the right and the capacity of all mankind. (Applause.)

65. How come these rightwing orgs are tax exempt?
Those far-right organizations all seem to be listed as "charities."
http://www.irs.gov/charities/charitable/

Under the Internal Revenue Code, all section 501(c)(3) organizations are absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office. Contributions to political campaign funds or public statements of position (verbal or written) made on behalf of the organization in favor of or in opposition to any candidate for public office clearly violate the prohibition against political campaign activity. Violation of this prohibition may result in denial or revocation of tax-exempt status and the imposition of certain excise tax.

43. spin from Washington Times
Oddly enough, though, one factor that may well prove to work in the Pentagon deputy's favor may be his personal life, which sheds a different light on the diehard neoconservative policy wonk. The 61-year-old divorcé has been dating Shaha Ali Riza, a Tunisian-born gender specialist who has handled the bank's external relations on Middle Eastern issues for the past few years. His affection for the Oxford-educated feminist may well be proof that Wolfowitz too can listen to and appreciate a diverse range of ideas, which will undoubtedly be an asset in his new role.

52. "gender specialist"? .......uhhhh!
I'm sure that means something to somebody....but I'm guessing your average street prostitute could carry the same title with equivalently attained job skills....

62. Um, at risk of sounding 'stoopid' ... what exactly is a gender specialist?
And what exactly do they do? Is it like a personal shopper, picking out different styles of gender for someone?

This thread is a hoot, even the comblickers up top!

I'll take anything, even this, to keep Wolfie from the job. Now, what will get him completely out of Washington?

45. Check Wolfie's cryptic comment in the Daily Mail story's last paragraph.
However, Wolfowitz's only comment on the complaints has been a terse statement issued through a Pentagon spokesman. He said: "If a personal relationship presents a potential conflict of interest, I will comply with bank policies to resolve the issue."

Hmmmm..... does that mean he will fire her? Or does it mean he'll turn down the job? Must mean one or the other, right? My guess is the former.

I'd love to see this slime ball take a fall.

70. Nope> it means he'll resolve the issue by changing the policy.
After all, he's one of bush's neocons....they change any policy they don't like, but only as it applies to them. "Comply" only comes in AFTER he changes the policy to his liking.

46. To put this in perspective,
on every Defense Department or defense contractor job application, (or at least in security clearance questionnaires) they specifically ask what relationship(s) a person might have to foreign nationals, people who from "other" countries, etc. Things like that. They are the kinds of information that can be used in a couple of ways: One, one can be blackmailed if one were to be taken hostage or found in a compromising situation, and two, they could infer undue influence (exactly like the Wolfowitz scenario). The bottom line is, they are sometimes automatic no-gos depending on the strength of the relationship. And yet this guy is not only an Admin neocon, but also getting installed as head of the World Bank (after he did such a great job with the Bu$h Administration, he deserves a promotion, don't you think?)

53. What is a "gender specialist"? see Post #43...
It's just such an odd job description ...for a bank employee, also. Guees I could understand it somehow meaning something within the medical field....

To impress his girl? That is wild, but knowing how strange much of the Bush admin is, I wouldn't be really surprised
