Police find man, but girl still missing (Iowa Amber Alert)

Police were a questioning a man Friday suspected of abducting a 10-year-old Cedar Rapids girl from her home and setting off a statewide Amber Alert.

Roger P. Bentley, 37, of Brandon, a registered sex offender, was taken into custody about 7 a.m. Friday by police in Johnson County. Police also found his pickup truck.

Officials did not say where Bentley was found. No charges have been filed, but the girl, Jetseta Marrie Gage, is still missing, Cedar Rapids police said.

This doesn't sound good at all.

We, as a society, have spent an obscene amount on the plight of one family with one woman in a PVS. Wouldn't the American public rather this money be spent developing a strategy to better protect our children. I sure would.

Is there any chance that all the publicity about the Jessica Lundsford abduction and murder could've triggered this guy to look for prey of his own. In no way am I suggesting that this guy shouldn't be held fully accountable -- I'm just wondering if there are consequences to the way the media sensationalizes these cases.

i'm certain you could find a psychologist who would support that idea. our media is rabid in exploitation of this kind of tragedy... but very weak on the solution. part of the reason Amber alerts are so effective is the rather sick situation that the media treats it as a starter pistol in a kind of game of "will they live or die?"

it's such a sad story that today i'm fresh out of ideas for how to make the situation any better. sigh.

you can't rehab these monsters and they always get little time and are well protected. Pop a cap in their heads and kick them in the ditch and let the buzzards have them.

They get way too much protection.

Every time that the penalties are increased, a sex offender of this type becomes more likely to kill their victim, because they see eliminating the witness as their only way to avoid being caught. If we hospitalized these types of offenders, we'd get a lot more of these kids back alive. Traumatized, but alive.

Besides which, killing these does nothing about the offenders that aren't so obvious. The media focuses on the stereotypical sex offender, the outsider male degenerate. But a lot of child molesters aren't caught because they're family members, because they're female, or because they hold positions of authority like priests. It's a scapegoating tactic, and all it does is make people feel better about never looking at anybody but the 'uncouth' as potential threats.

This type of scum does not deserve the money or effort it takes to try to "rehabilitate" them. Simple. You rape and kill a child... you die. End Of Story!! In the meanwhile, parents should take nothing for granted when it comes to their kids.

they should be locked up for life with no chance for parole or reentry into society.

We lock up drug offenders for years and they have a chance of getting rehabilitated and are not hurting and killing others like these maniacs.

This is so sad. I live in Johnson County. Let's hope that son of a bitch that did this to that beautiful little girl gets his due. It's times like this I wish Iowa had the death penalty.

This is the freakiest thing. Used to be they'd catch kids walking home from school, out in public, even on the front lawn.

every time something like this happens. it's the stuff horror films are made of. one thing caught my eye in this article:

What a brave little guy, having to endure all of this. What do you tell a kid when this happens to their siblings, relatives, or friends? How can a human inflict such suffering on another? That is the question I'll never understand.

It appears that a body has been found and the suspect is in custody in the same county as where the body was found. The young girl was mentally challenged and apparently fell victim to a child molester. What a sad story. Here is the lastest news from the Des Moines CBS affiliate:

The local news (KCRG) said the brother of the pervert was also arrested for abducting a child, and the mother is supposed to be a witness in that trial. Sounds like there's more to this story yet to come.
Also, the mother met the pervert because she used to date his brother, but they didn't say if it's the same one that's on trial.
A lot of details are still coming out, but it sounds like this poor little girl has had a pretty hard life. They also metioned that she had been sexually abused before. Plus she was born with spina bifida, and was a little slow mentally. Poor little thing.

Unfortunately, this entire situation and its details read right out of the pedophile playbook. The pedophile also has a brother who abducts children. Obviously, both of these guys were probably abused themselves--by their own parents.

The mother of this child may have been dating a guy who abducted children. This child had been sexually abused before. Obviously this mother dated and was involved with child predators. Many children who are sexually abused, come from families where the mother was sexually abused too.

This is such a vicious tragedy.

Why is out society breeding so many people who sexually abuse children?

Obviously, these types of crimes have always happened. But not like now. It's rampant. Our society is saturated with child predators.

Why is this happening?

often sexually molested children either grow up to become molesters themselves, or else they marry one.

It sounds harsh, but I think life without parole is the only possible solution for this type of offender.
