KUFA, Iraq (AFP) - A follower of radical Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr called for a million-strong demonstration in Iraq (news - web sites) to demand a timetable for the withdrawal of US troops.

"Passing laws that contradict Islam will be tantamount to treason to the marajaiya (religious authority) and not insisting on a timetable for an end to the occupation is even greater treason," said Sheikh Nasser al-Saedi in his sermon at the Grand Mosque in Kufa, south of Baghdad.

"Last Friday I called for a million-strong demonstration to demand a timetable for the end of the occupation and I repeat this demand again and I call on all political forces to take part in this demonstration."

1. Wow pretty restrained.
"called for a million-strong demonstration in Iraq to demand a timetable for the withdrawal of US troops."

I wonder how Bush will react to a million + people protesting our troops being there... Doubt the troops would let that many people congregate.

2. He'll probably just call it a 'focus group.' He'll insist
that a million people in the street are just a mob, and that the real people of Iraq just love us. Of course when people demonstrate against governments we don't like, it's called the blossoming of democracy.

6. I don't think it would be wise for 1 million Iraqi to bunch up...
like that. One US Bomb could kill all of them.

12. You have a point, but I think bombing a huge protest group might even
penetrate the tiny tiny brains of Republicans as not a good thing. Then again, Faux, CNN and MSRNC could sell it as progress.

10. The enemy of one's enemy is not necessarily a friend.
al Sadr is scary. The fact that he does not like the Bush Regime occupation does not make him a good guy.

11. EXACTLY
Al-Sadr represents the antithesis of liberal values...by supporting radical Islamic fundamentalist hate and squelching the rights of women and dissidents.
