Bush offers condolences to Minn. tribe

NEDRA PICKLER

Associated Press

WACO, Texas - President Bush on Friday expressed condolences to the leader of the Minnesota Indian reservation where 10 people died Monday in the second-worst school shooting in U.S. history.

Bush talked to Floyd Jourdain Jr., chairman of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa, for five minutes Friday morning, offering his sympathy for the victims of a teen-ager's shooting rampage and the entire Red Lake community and pledging to provide federal assistance, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said.

Jeff Weise, 16, shot to death five students, a security guard and a teacher at the school on Red Lake Indian reservation, then killed himself. Earlier, he shot to death his grandfather and the man's girlfriend.

Gifts of money have been pouring into the tribe as it prepares for the victims' funerals. Bush told Jourdain that he used part of his weekly radio address to encourage Americans to send more help, Perino said. The president's address was taped Friday morning and will be broadcast Saturday.

"Chairman Jourdain said he was very appreciative of the call and for the federal assistance so far," Perino said. "The president ended the call by saying he is praying for the victims and the families."

1. They interviewed the family of one of the survivors last night
on a local news channel. The family expressed their disappointment that no one from the White House had offered any sympathy or assistance. So you know damn well this response had to be forced out of them.

3. Well! Somebody at the WH must be reading DU or listening to
the spokesman for the tribe!

Earlier, there was a thread relating how upset this tribe was that the Great White Father would fly back to Waqsh for that white girl in Fl, but hasn't said a word of condolence to any of the tribe members after so many were killed!

39. There was a big article in the Wash Post
Someone in that bunch of morons at 1600 Pa Ave must read the Post!! But clearly he should have said something the day it happened, not several days later.

4. Hmm, a couple of white kids shoot up a school in a well-off area of Denver
and it's 24/7 coverage for days.

A Native American kid kills nearly as many people on a reservation and it's an afterthought.

Hmm....

14. excellent point... HEY BUSH, WHAT ABOUT THE OIL DEATHS IN TEXAS?
any comment there, sir? or are you going to let that one slip until after Terri's body is dead so you can squeeze maximum martyrdom out of it? we know it might be distracting to the US public to offer condolences to 14 or more people WHO WANTED TO LIVE while you're interfering in the case of someone who is braindead and NEVER WANTED TO LIVE THAT WAY.

on the straight-forward stuff, while allowing rove to lead him on wild goose chases like the florida debacle that has his approval rating at an ALL TIME LOW.

17. AFTER he was shamed into it
Native Americans complained how Bush jumped right into the Schiavo case where there was a WHITE woman involved, but completely ignored the school shooting at a Native American school.

Too late George, the damage is done. Another self-inflicted wound.

An emergency meeting of Congress for one brain-dead woman and nothing for nine dead children or their parents? It speaks volumns of political strategy.
