NRA Says Teachers Should Have Guns

PHOENIX -- All options should be considered to prevent rampages like the Minnesota school shooting that took 10 lives -- including making guns available to teachers, a top National Rifle Association leader said Friday.

"I'm not saying that that means every teacher should have a gun or not, but what I am saying is we need to look at all the options at what will truly protect the students," the NRA's first vice president, Sandra S. Froman, told The Associated Press.

Gun-control restrictions would not have prevented Jeff Weise, 16, from killing nine people and himself Monday at Red Lake High School near Bemidji, Minn., said Froman, an attorney expected next month to be elected president of the NRA, which claims 4 million members.

The public has no idea (and to their credit, they have no way of knowing since they're not personally involved) of the downright harassment many teachers must endure because of their principals. (The degree varies from state to state, but it is definitely a problem.) I know that sounds crazy, but it is the truth.

Oh, and teachers should not have guns for the same reason they should not carry much money with them at work... it can be stolen.

the way to curb gun violence is.......to arm everyone imaginable. Incredible logic. How about real gun control. It would take a generation to really get a grip on things, maybe more. It's time.

I'm pretty pro-gun and generally agree with the NRA most of the time. But the only people that should have guns in schools are security personell, and even then only as needed.

But teachers who get a lot of death threats from parents or "concerned citizens" may want to consider arming themselves off campus.

Who's going to arm, and train, buy ammo for, and maintain training for millions of teachers nationwide?

and the niece of another in an inner city school, I can say with full certainty that my relatives would refuse. My mom HATES guns. Loathes them. Flipped out when my brother brought home a cap gun one day. No way in hell.

calling for more guns... and the guns that killed the kids were cop's guns... if a cop's gun can be used to kill kids, how safe is a teacher's gun? having guns in schools is just a sick, sick idea, and i'm SOOOOO glad he announced this in the light of the school killings this week. it makes the nra look exactly like what they are... 'concealed carry weapon' (ccw) training and will apply for the permit shortly. but guns at school are not a good idea. just like guns in bars are a bad idea.

the instructor gave a big discount for the group of teachers who took the class with me.

and personally, I think it's a TERRIBLE idea. Talk about ruining the impact that education should have on our children. The last thing I need is a bunch of students concerned about me having a gun. We have an armed security guard at my school, and sometimes I wonder why we even have THAT.

I'm in my 36th year of teaching. I can't imagine a situation where a gun, TASER or dart gun would have created any kind of positive result.

I suspect that if you were out of milk, the NRA would suggest using a gun!

Metal detectors and armed security guards at every school door. Teachers packing heat, maybe pearl-handled revolvers, and bandoliers in muted colors.

It has to be so easy to be an NRA spokeperson. All you need to parrot is that the answer to all problems with guns is simply to introduce more guns.
