Protesters in Schiavo case flood Florida abuse hot line
------------------------------
The Associated Press
March 25, 2005, 8:59 PM EST
------------------------------
TALLAHASSEE -- Hundreds of protesters trying to keep Terri Schiavo alive are calling the Florida Department of Children & Families hot line each day, and officials are concerned they could be jamming the line for people who are trying to report abuse unrelated to the case.

``The Department of Children & Families appreciates the concern expressed in a number of heartfelt calls to the abuse hot line on behalf of Terri Schiavo's well-being. Inadvertently these callers may be putting other neglected, abused and vulnerable citizens at risk,'' said DCF spokeswoman Zoraya Suarez on Friday.

(snip)

Gov. Jeb Bush's office also asked protesters to stop calling the line.

``We understand the strong emotions on both sides, but we would implore people to please not call the abuse hot line because it could be preventing new emergencies from being reported when time is of the essence,'' said Bush spokeswoman Alia Faraj.

22. I wouldn't be too surprised
if one of those people would do just that.
I listened to Michael Regan(?) tonight,he was talking to a woman about the horrible situation, etc.when she she said, ift would be the republicans fault if Terri died because they're not doing enough, blah, blah blah. Mike regan almost lost it and at one time he said..."take a gun, shoot Schiavo, shoot his wife, shoot his children, but don't blame the republicans for this"

Unbelivably irresponsible!I was thinking what if one of those fanatics would actually do that? They are so crazed,I'm afraid somebody is going to get hurt before this is over!

39. Yes, I think it could well happen.
I just hope the more violent protests are disorganized. An earlier attempt to "rescue" TS was foiled by the police blockade of the hospice, so I fear that a more organized attack will indeed be planned. Then what? Murders? Riots? Martial law?

I think a lot of people are expecting reports of breaking news from the epicenter of this horror to be announced at any time this weekend or later, as long as TS survives. After she dies, then the question shifts from what they will attempt as a "rescue" to what they will do to people who "did not protect TS" as a "punishment."

Yes, incredibly irresponsible things have been said by the hate-radio announcers and others in this case, and we all will reap what they are sowing. They've gotten by with lies and horrors all along on their shows, they feel absolutely no restraint in what they are spewing out to their increasingly violence-prone audience.

46. Has he been taken to task for such irresponsible on-air behavior?
He's directing it at an audience of fanatics. And some of those same fanatics may just take him at his word. They've painted themselves into a corner on this one with all the hysteria that they keep ratcheting up, they're leaving themselves no way out. There's at least a few of them who will refuse to go quietly, I'm afraid.

What a dreadful episode in American history. Dreadful. A new low. Brought to you by the bush brothers.

12. What about the 5-6 month old child in Texas that Bush killed
By allowing the hospitals to pull the plug on people who can;t afford medical help. Where were the protesters for that? Didn't they want this child to live for another 15 years? Where was Tom Delay, this is happening in his own state, with a law signed by his President( not ours) when he was the Gov. Where are the 'right-to-life'ers on this?
Oh wait... Did I say Bush signed the law. Does that mean the Bush and his fascist buddies just don't give a damn about us, those who are not the 'Have and the Have More'.

26. I read that the mother
of the baby, Sun, had received no prenatal care. Another gift from the poor, who need the help, going directly into the pockets of Bush supporters, in the form of even more tax cuts.

This country has absolutely no sense of proportion when it comes to matters like this. They just salivate like Pavlov's dog when their Idiot-in-Chief rings the bell.

27. So correct-- Its also like that in the "abortion debate"
Hey 13 year old girl carry that kid to term---with little or no health care and when the kid is born weird, let the grandparents raise it and whenever you need treatment-- just go to the emergency room and don't pay

Oh and yes-- unless its really an emergency -- the hospital will tell you to quit crying and go home.

LOL

14. Around 70 other patients, from what I've read. There was a thread ...
on DU yesterday @ a man w/terminal cancer(?) who had expressed to his grand daughter his fear of dying alone. She had been staying at the hospice (many provide sleeping quarters for family close to the end) & his nurse called the room & told to come - his time was near. Due to the increased security from all the protesters trying to invade the hospice to 'rescue' Mrs. Schiavo, she was detained at a checkpoint (in her pajamas) for a short time, until staff intervened. It was long enough to keep her from her grand father's bedside ... he died alone. She gave an interview as she was leaving the hospice, surprise - not many news outlets covered it. She said that before the fundies descended, families were able to take some of their loved ones outside, for a bit of fresh air & sunshine. I would imagine that would be terribly precious to someone savoring every bit of life they had left to them. Now, they can't to that simple thing, go outside on the grass for a break from the rooms. The grand daughter said it had begun to feel like a prison.

Yes, they are affecting the end days of others in the hospice. Their days are irreplaceable, just as precious to them & their families as Mrs. Schiavo's are to her family. They should be ashamed of the strain they are placing on the others in the hospice. That grand daughter will forever remember her grand-dad died w/out her, alone.

16. Here's a thought...
Could we get some residents to file suit against these asshat protesters?

It's clear that the protests are having a negative impact on the quality of life of these residents.

Could they at least get a court order to MOVE these wackos? It could be win/win if they tried...just imagine the wingnuts fighting a case AGAINST 70 dying people!

37. How about following the guardian's report and doing swallowing
tests and having independent impartial neurologists examine her first as the impartial guardian recommended. (Instead of the "pull the plug first, ask questions later" tactics of Judge Greer and Mike Schiavo). Once the swallowing and neurologist info came back to the impartial guardian, I believe I would follow the impartial guardian's advice, wouldn't you?

45. I don't think that that woman
if she CAN feel anything, should be pricked, probed, stuck or prodded any more to prove what already has been proven over the past 15 years. All of a sudden, after 15 years---DUH! We should give her a swallowing test!!!!! We shoulda had a V8!!

To suggest that she should be subjected to more torture just to ease someone's mind who isn't directly involved in her care is selfish, self-centered and self-absorbed.

see that big black space in her brain--that's where who Terri "is" used to live. In 2005, no one has invented any proceedure, medication or method to regrow functioning, auto-programmed brain tissue. Terri isn't coming back.
