Schiavo Judge Protected After Threats
I didn't realize this judge was a conservative Christian ...

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) -

0326dv-schiavo-appeal Amid the pitched legal battle over Terri Schiavo that has been fought through his court, Pinellas County Circuit Judge George Greer has been under the protection of armed guards, and friends say his family also is protected.

Death threats have been made against him for allowing Michael Schiavo to remove the feeding tube that has kept his 41-year-old wife alive for the past 15 years, and the Southern Baptist church that Greer belonged to for years has asked him to leave the congregation.

Greer - a conservative Christian and longtime Republican known for an easy manner - has become the public face of the judiciary in this internationally watched fight. But despite the mounting pressure, he has been steadfast in his rulings that Terri Schiavo is in a persistent vegetative state and did not want to be kept alive artificially.

"There are very few people who have shown the will to stand up to raw power," said Stetson University Law Professor Michael Allen, who has studied the Schiavo case. "He's one."

4. The way this is going
the Feds will have to put him and his family in the equivelent of a witness protection program.

He could have caved and been their hero. Instead he followed the law - the conservative law. Now he's got death threats and people taking out bounties on him.

5. I find it highly ironic
Edited on Sat Mar-26-05 10:00 PM by bush_whacked
that the right wing believes in the "value of life" but only for those they deem worthy. Can I get a rule book that says who is and is not worthy of life?

An unborn fetus- right to life
A woman in PVS- right to life
A murderer- death and quick smart too!

Sanctity of marriage is all well and good, except when they believe one partner isn't "worthy" Huh.

ETA Judge who rules according to law- death

14. Notice the causes they pick.
They never pick anyone who could mess up their fanaticism by going off-message. In fact, they pick "people" who can't speak for themselves at all.

I'm not against fetuses, or folks with brain damage, or anyone, actually, but I don't feel that I can speak unerringly for them either.

8. My head hurts.
Court after court after court upheld Terri Schiavo`s right to have her decision honored.

Human drama and tragedy aside, this case has shown me the very ugly face of fundamentalist hysteria and the willingness of some politicians to substitute treachery for public service.

When the governor of Florida can call out the police to have a court decision overthrown and people with duct tape over their mouths can swear to the world that Terri is saying "I want to live", we`d better take a closer look at the scary nation we`ve become.

15. This man made very fair judgements
Being a Christian (or even a conservative in some cases) doesn't always have adverse effects on a person.

11. And his Baptist church kicked him out as well
This past week, he parted ways with his Southern Baptist church, which had advocated keeping Terri Schiavo alive, after his pastor suggested it would be better if he left.

"You must know that in all likelihood it is this case which will define your career and this case that you will remember in the waning days of life," Calvary Baptist Pastor William Rice wrote to Greer in a letter than later became public. "I hope you can find a way to side with the angels and become an answer to the prayers of thousands."

12. I read a good bit about him.
He's a Southern Baptist. Resigned his membership in his church almost two years ago over this case. He ruled in a way that a bunch of the activist fundies didn't like and has paid dearly for it. Basically had a feeding frenzy on one of their own, like sharks going crazy at the scent of shark blood. Interesting to see what effect this case has on Judge Greer.

Actually, I believe him to be a decent and principled man who was on the wrong side of a publicity campaign.

21. Yes, Judge Greer was kicked out of his church congregation for his
decision. He's a brave man. "Republican" and "conservative" don't necessarily equate to "lawless." In fact, the REAL conservative Republicans, those few that are left, are appalled at what the neocons have done to the country.

Judge Greer deserves our respect for taking a stand that would threaten his life, his career, his family, and his whole pattern of life. He did it because of his faithfulness to the rule of LAW. This is what a true judge is, and why the neocons -- having all but destroyed the power of the legislative branch of the US government -- are now attacking the judicial branch. It's all that stands between them and their goal of a theocratic fascist dictatorship.

As I said, the true conservative Republicans are horrified by this.

29. The *true* Republicans are enjoying this. The *true* conservatives aren't
This lawlessness has been the hallmark of the Republican Party ever since before Teddy Roosevelt left it to start the Bull Moose Party. This is the true face of Republicanism and that judge was foolish enough to buy into the propaganda and support this in the voting booth, up until he had to deal with it personally.

But this is not conservatism. Any BS that Republicans are conservatives has always been BS. They will say and try to make people believe anything to keep their power.

In reality the Democratic Party is still the conservative party when compared to the Republican Party. The Republican Party is the party for the uber-wealthy oligopolists who **pretend** to be "Christian" for appearances only, just as they did when they helped build Hitler up.

26. we can thank the neocon media for generating the fervor
Pundits on CNN, Fox and MSNBC, supported by RW nuts like Peggy Noonan and Ann Coulter, gave the fundies 24 hour access to their forum to spread their message.

If anything happens to Judge Greer or Michael Schiavo the corporate media is greatly responsible.
