Somali threatens jihad if peacekeepers are sent in
An Islamic leader on a US terrorist list threatened holy war if the African Union sends peacekeepers to Somalia in an attempt to install a government currently in exile in neighboring Kenya.

Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys, a former Somali army colonel suspected of having ties with the al-Qaeda terror group, told reporters Friday that allowing foreign troops into Somalia was contrary to Islamic teachings.

He said it would be the religious duty of all Somalis to fight any peacekeeping force.

4. sounds like a lot of hot air
I suspect they will use foreign troops but not any from their immediate neighbors (i.e. Ethiopia.) From what I have read and heard the principle concern is over Ethiopian troops, and to a lessor extent Kenyan. Ethiopia and Somalia have a longstanding border dispute primarily as a consequence of the original demarcation lines drawn out by colonial powers NOT falling along ethnic borders. Ergo, there are a lot of ethnic Somalis living in Ethiopia and Djibouti (previously French Somaliland), and to a lesser extent in parts of Kenya. Given that Ethiopia won all the historic border skirmishes, Somali pride would be particularly offended by inclusion of Ethiopian troops in any efforts to stabilize Mogadishu. From what I can tell, it is only a minority of Somalis which are against all African Union troops. This minority tends to be made of of those with vested interests in the existing order/chaos in Mogadishu.

6. Obviously nobody has seen "Black Hawk" Down!
Sources in the OZ Foreign Office reckon Somalia has been going as well as it can, since American troops left. OZ foreign affairs people were in Somalia recently as part of the Tsunami relief effort. They note that American people were also present in Somalia recently. However they had a really bad reception!!!! Somali's have long memories it would appear.
By the way. Djibouti the little country to the south of Somalia was owned by the Italians, not the French!

Djibouti is a country made up of the former French territories of Afars and the Issas. (and it's not to the south of Somalia, it's on Somalia's northern border)

Somalia itself is comprised of the former colonies Italian Somalia and British Somalia. They became one country in 1960.

Eritrea, which lies to the north of Djibouti, is also a former Italian colony.
