Jews, Christians, Moslems in Israel unite ... to protest gays.
Edited on Thu Mar-31-05 08:24 AM by eallen

JERUSALEM - (KRT) - Alarmed by a large international gay gathering planned in Jerusalem this summer, Israel's chief rabbis joined top Christian clerics and Muslim representatives Wednesday to condemn the event as a provocation, warning that it could trigger unrest in the city holy to their faiths.

Representing communities that are sometimes bitterly divided by political and religious conflict, the Jewish, Christian and Muslim clergymen appeared at a joint news conference organized by the chief rabbinate, in a rare show of unity.

At least, we now know what is so important to these three faiths that it will overcome their differences. I know there are many moderate and liberal believers who are thinking, "no, no, gay bashing is not the most important thing in our religion." I don't know what to say. It's hard to get that message out, when so many other believers work so hard to deliver the opposite message.

1. It's obvious
to me that gay bashing IS the most important thing to these religions. If it weren't then why are the leaders of these faiths just now coming together?? *possably NOT sarcasm*

3. Note that this was done at an American Evangelicals behest
They not only have to control everything here, they have to go abroad too!

Jerusalem has actually had gay parades in the past, and Tel Aviv, which is a very open and modern city, has them yearly. This is a cleric thing, not particularly an Israeli thing. The majority of the Israeli population is quite secular.

5. well, that's just wrong.
IMHO.

However, I don't fell like registering to read the rest of the article, so I'm only going on the excerpts. i assume they are representative.

FWIW, I just think its plain wrong to pass off a monumental display of intolerance as a unifying act between disparate faiths. I would hope the members of those faiths would speak out against their woefully misguided leaders.

There are many virtuous and uplifting things that are common among those three faiths. To pick rejection of gays is very discouraging. Homophobia (or whatever the correct term would be here-- gay hatred?) is more a product of people's innate (though wrong) prejudices and has little to do with the core message of all three faiths.

I have always believed that any person who obsesses on homosexuals is not secure in their own sexuality. I'm a straight person, but I have no concern, obsession, fear or distaste for my gay brothers and sisters. I have only the same admiration and respect for them as I do for anyone. It always distresses me when religious leaders, who should be using their time and resources teaching about God, finding the lost and uplifting the found, instead waste it disastrously on their own pet object or issue of intolerance.

The only people Christ spoke out against were those misusing religion for their own ends or purposes...well, guess what? Christ would do it to these guys, too, IMHO.
