House passes resolution to extend terms in office

BRENT KALLESTAD
Associated Press

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Many Florida lawmakers don't think they're in office long enough to be effective. So they're planning to ask voters to tack on a few more years to help out the learning curve for future legislators.

A bill (HJR 1777) that would ask voters to extend the present limit of eight consecutive years in the same office to a dozen (possibly more in some circumstances) passed on a 92-24 vote Thursday in the House of Representatives. Similar legislation is also working its way through at the Senate where it has the support of President Tom Lee, R-Brandon.

The measure, if it passes the Senate, would be on the November 2006 ballot.

"I would call this 'the mulligan bill,'" said Rep. Nancy Detert, R-Venice, using the slang term for replaying a bad golf shot. "I'm not afraid to make a mistake, and I don't think the voters are either."

Some Democrats argued that's exactly who should determine term limits without any nudging from lawmakers.

4. This is what the repukes were pushing for with their attempted
takeover back in '94. That's all we heard about. Term limit this and term limit that. Now, when it isn't convenient, they want to change it. Fucking hypocritical bastards!

7. They were all for term limits when we had the DEMS in charge
now that they got rid of most of the DEMS, they want to change the rules to insure that they keep control of the place.

9. Good for the gander
I was against term limits when they were passed to begin with. Now that they are in charge, they want to extend them. Wasn't term limits part of the "Contract On America"?

8. Wait until this comes up at the Congressional level....
...to increase the CURRENT terms for Congress. That will coincide with legislation that will make it easier to nominate and confirm candidates for the judiciary at all levels.

Shortly after that, look for Herr Busch to declare himself "President for Life".

10. ehehehehe
Yeah cause you know, 8 years isn't enough to pollute and corrupt the legislative process, you need 12 YEARS TO SPREAD YOUR FILTH! I cannot get out of this state fast enough.
