NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - Former Gov. John G. Rowland gave thanks for his family and supporters Friday as he prepared to enter a federal prison in Pennsylvania to serve a yearlong sentence for corruption.
"Throughout this whole ordeal, one thing has become abundantly clear: how blessed I am to have such a wonderful wife and loving children," Rowland, 47, said in a statement issued through his attorney. "I am also grateful for the prayers and support from so many people across our state."
He's due to surrender Friday at the federal prison in Loretto, Pa., though there was no sign of him there at midmorning.
The once-popular three-term
Republican admitted accepting more than $100,000 in trips to Las Vegas, vacations in Vermont and Florida and improvements at his lakeside cottage in exchange for political access.
