Order OKs Bird Flu Quarantine in U.S.
WASHINGTON - President Bush signed an executive order Friday authorizing the government to impose a quarantine to deal with any outbreak of a particularly lethal variation of influenza now found in Southeast Asia.

The order is intended to deal with a type of influenza commonly referred to as bird flu. Since January 2004, an estimated 69 people, primarily in Vietnam, have contracted the disease. But Dr. Keiji Fukuda, a flu expert at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has said he suspects there are more cases.
.....
Bush's order was described as a standby precaution, adding pandemic influenza to the government's list of communicable diseases for which a quarantine is authorized. It gives the government legal authority to detain or isolate a passenger arriving in the United States to prevent an infection from spreading.

The authority would be used only if the passenger posed a threat to public health and refused to cooperate with a voluntary request, the Health and Human Services Department said.

5. Shhhhhh...
Don't tell anyone, but, health news drives me nutz.

:hide:

Mercury, pesticides in corn, mad cow, bird flu, sars, west nile... you name it & I get paranoid.

:scared:

The other day a CIA agent was being interviewed about the CIA's role in unleashing some kind of swine flu (or something like that) in Cuba's livestock which wiped out their animals in the 60s.

:tinfoilhat:

I'm not making any accusations or jumping to conclusions or anything like that. BUT gheeesh these spooks scare the hell out of me. More than that... I truly believe the powerful have no problem testing deadly diseases and chemicals on us.

There, I've said it... I've come clean. :woohoo:

7. Large Pharma has no problem
Apparently large Pharma corporations have no problem testing new drugs on the public these days. Why not? They have plenty of customers to replace them.

Why should it be any different with DARPA http://www.darpa.mil/ the CIA or the pentagon?

I'm so cynical these days.

it seems to me for this plan to work that all the passengers should be quarantined.
It's not going to work to try to prevent spread by quarantine anyway, someone will slip though eventually. I know with most flus the most infectious period is when there are no symptoms.

Order OKs Bird Flu Quarantine in U.S.

Saturday April 2, 2005 12:16 AM

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush signed an executive order Friday authorizing the government to impose a quarantine to deal with any outbreak of a particularly lethal variation of influenza now found in Southeast Asia.

The fatality rate among those reported to have the disease is about 70 percent.

Health officials around the world are trying to monitor the virus closely because some flu pandemics are believed to have originated with birds.

29. this pisses me off SSSSOOOO BBBAAADDD
if they had started working on a vaccine a few of years ago, when this first came up, it would be ready by now.
as a pet bird owner, i know what is coming. and the thing is, it will not work. you can kill everthing with feathers on this planet, and it will not stop it. and people have a habit of not volunteering to have their pets murdered. so they hide them, or flee with them. it never, ever works.

31. I do not agree a vaccine would be ready now
Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 10:52 AM by amazona
I am extremely concerned about the de-population methods used with avian flu, Newcastle's etc. but our record of success with flu vaccine is actually very poor because it mutates too fast. Did you see the report last year that suggested there was no decrease in human deaths by flu attributable to the vaccines pushed every year? The decrease in death rate due to flu is a result of better support for the elderly and others infected. Other viral diseases that have no vaccine are showing similar improvements in the death rate.

Historically a vaccine has not been the answer for flu. Many years, the vaccine predicted and developed turns out to be the wrong vaccine anyway...and a new one must be developed each flu season.

I feel your fears that birds will be persecuted and de-populated in excess of necessity are right on the money. The AMerican Federation of Aviculture tries to keep an eye on the issue, but they are the little guy when up against the huge poultry industry, and while we have better controls on U.S.D.A. de-populations than we did in the 1970s when pet birds were being killed right and left with little proof of infection...I truly fear that in event of a hysteria all bets are off.

It is fine line to walk between combatting hysteria -- I believe a lot of "1918 style bird flu is coming" press is backed by the pharmaceutical industry seeking gov't grants and pay-offs -- and seeming to advocate a "who cares" attitude. At this time I am satisfied that U.S.D.A. is on top of the bird flu situation in the U.S. and we should not be panicked.

I remember in the 1970s when it was 1918 style swine flu that was going to come and kill us all. And yet we're still standing.

The conservation movement is a breeding ground of communists
and other subversives. We intend to clean them out,
even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country.
--John Mitchell, US Attorney General 1969-72
