Italian tipped as next pontiff
By GERARD McMANUS and ADRIAN TAME
03apr05

AN Italian cardinal whose diocese is the largest in Italy and the son of a Cuban factory worker are firming as the favourites to replace John Paul II as pope.

Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi, of Milan, is tipped as most likely to be installed in the Vatican after 27 years of a non-Italian pope.

And Cardinal Jaime Ortega y Alamino, of Cuba, is second favourite. He would become the first pope from Latin America, home to 500 million Catholics.

If the cardinals decide on a non-Italian candidate, the field is wide
open.

13. i suspect there's a strong anti-catholic group of freepers, anyway.
so they're going to hate whoever becomes pope. but, yes, a cuban pope would really work them into a bogger-eating frenzy.

2. Journalists and pundits can predict what they want, they just don't
know! I remember when John Paul II was elected. Everybody was shocked because he was sthe first non-Italian Pope in over 200 years! Because of history, journalists always predict the new one will be an Italian, but no one will know until they see that puff of white smoke!

14. You're so right....
With the way this process works...no one has a clue as to who will be the next pope. I think that's really the purpose of the conclave - make the right decision for the exact moment at hand.

3. Odds stacked against successor being Italian
Odds stacked against successor being Italian
By Bruce Johnston and Jonathan Petrein
April 3, 2005
The Sun-Herald

SNIP:

The next Pope is likely to be 65 to 75 (the average age of electing cardinals is now 70), have a good command of languages, above all English, and have had experience inside the Roman Curia.

But this time, he cannot be too young, since few cardinals - especially the younger and more ambitious ones who might one day nurture designs to become Pope themselves - are unlikely to want a successor to rule for as long as John Paul II.

This harms the chances of Christoph Schonborn, the brilliant Archbishop of Vienna, who is 60, although he would be ideal next time.

The candidates
Dionigi Tettamanzi: b Milan, 14/3/34. Archbishop of Milan. A conservative and favourite choice of Italians.

Angelo Scola: b 7/11/41. As patriarch of Venice, he holds the post that has produced three 20th-century popes.

Giovanni Battista Re: b 31/1/34. Formerly in charge of Vatican's day-to-day management. Now in charge of world's bishops.

Francis Arinze: b Nigeria, 1/11/32. Only black man to have sat on Papal throne, sitting in for the pontiff in the early 1990s.

Joseph Ratzinger: b Bavaria, 16/4/27. As prefect of the Congregational for the Doctrine of the Faith, he represents the Church's rigid moral line.

Godfried Danneels: b Bruges, 4/6/33. Primate of Belgium. An ideal age, likeable, down-to-earth.

Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga: b 29/12/42. Archbishop of Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Rising star of the Latin American church.

Alfonso Lopez Trujillo: b 8/11/35. A Colombian, he is a staunch conservative and pro-life campaigner.

Claudio Hummes: b 3/8/34. Archbishop of Sao Paulo. Popular with curia and bishops.

Cardinal Jaime Lucas Ortega y Alamino, Archbishop of St. Cristóbal, Havana , was born in Jagüey Grande in the diocese and province of Matanzas, Cuba, on 18 October 1936. His father was first a worker in the sugar factory close to the village where he was born, and subsequently a shop-keeper.--snip--

He earned a diploma in arts and sciences in 1955 and after one year at the university, entered the diocesan seminary of San Alberto Magno, directed by the Fathers of the Foreign Mission of Quebec.--snip--

On 4 December 1978, John Paul II named him Bishop of Pinar del Rio. He was consecrated on 14 January 1979 in the Cathedral of Matanzas, and on 21 January he took possession of his diocese. Three years of pastoral work in a deeply religious Catholic Diocese with a very committed and participative laity left an indelible mark on the soul of the Bishop who was promoted to the Archdiocese of Havana as Archbishop on 20 November 1981. On 27 December he took possession of this new See.--snip--

Thanks to his homilies, the archdiocesan monthly bulletin Aqui la Iglesia and other speeches and messages, he made himself known to the people in his archdiocese who listened to his opinions and followed his guidance despite the fact that the Church in Cuba has no access to the media.

In 1988 until November 1998, he was President of the Cuban Conference of Catholic Bishops. In this capacity, he took part in the fourth General Conference of the Latin-American Bishops in Santo Domingo.
