Bush Calls Pope 'Champion of Human Dignity'

Sat Apr 2, 2005 10:39 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush called Pope John Paul II a "champion of human dignity" as he awaited word on Saturday on the ailing pope's condition.

Bush opened his weekly radio address with a comment about John Paul, who lies close to death at the Vatican. "His Holiness is a faithful servant of God and a champion of human dignity and freedom. He is an inspiration to us all. Laura and I join millions of Americans and so many around the world who are praying for the Holy Father," he said.

Bush was in the Oval Office before 7 a.m. and was following the news reports from the Vatican. He was being kept up to date by White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card and his chief spokesman, Scott McClellan. Bush was expected to attend the funeral in the event the pope died.

He met the pope three times, twice at the Vatican, and last June, the president presented John Paul with the Medal of Freedom, the highest U.S. civilian award.

2. What's Bush know about "Human Dignity"?
Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 01:22 PM by BiggJawn
I thought he was all into "Restoring Dignitude" to the Opal Orifice, and we KNOW what a success that's been.

STFU, Dumbya. It's probably BECAUSE of that "Human Dignity" that you never got the ass-ripping you deserved when you were over there kissing J2P2's ring sucking up for a photo-op....

4. I heard him praising the Pope for his care for the poor and sick
This was during Jr and Pickles' audience with the Pope last year. I thought "Yeah, like you give a shit about the poor, like you do anything except make them poorer, take away their health care, etc."

The visit Chimp and Pickles had where the Idiot Boy was late, and then acted bored, almost in disdain, of being with the Pope while he criticized BushCo Iraq mistakes...

11. bu$shler talks of Human Dignity.
Hollow words from a hollow shell. The Puppet speaks, isn't that clever!

Do the Catholic faithful a huge favor, you excuse of a man: stay home. Those who grieve at this loss sure as hell don't need your ten thousand bodyguards, your armored limousine and hundreds of blocks of Rome cordoned off just so your sorry ass can be safe as you go through the motions.

You couldn't carry the Pope's jockstrap.

18. Pope condemns war in Iraq
Pope John Paul II has expressed renewed opposition to the possibility of war in Iraq, saying the use of military force had to be the "very last option".

In a New Year address to Vatican diplomats, the Pope said war was "always a defeat for humanity", and called instead for more diplomacy and dialogue.

"War cannot be decided upon, even when it is a matter of ensuring the common good, except as the very last option and in accordance with very strict conditions," Pope John Paul said.

19. Pope To Bush: 'Deplorable Events'
U.S. President George W. Bush got a sharp dose of Europe's opposition to his Iraq policy Friday, quietly in the halls of the Vatican from Pope John Paul II and loudly in the streets of Rome from thousands of demonstrators.

The ailing pontiff complained about recent "deplorable events," an apparent reference to the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. troops. In the absence of a commitment to shared human values, "neither war nor terrorism will ever be overcome," he said, struggling to speak

"Mr. President, your visit to Rome takes place at a moment of great concern for the continuing situation of grave unrest in the Middle East, both in Iraq and in the Holy Land," the pope said.

"In the past few weeks, other deplorable events have come to light which have troubled the civic and religious conscience of all."
