Abu Ghraib prison targeted again
"The Abu Ghraib prison, west of Baghdad, has been hit by a blast for the second time in less than 48 hours causing casualties among US forces.

Aljazeera has learned that a bomber detonated his explosive-laden car at the main gate of the prison on Monday.

Sources from Abu Ghraib told Aljazeera that five Iraqis were injured and that the explosion also caused casualties among US soldiers."

Iraqi Prison Attacked for Second Time Since Saturday

A suicide bomber driving a tractor near Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison has blown himself up in the second attack on the facility in the past two days.

Police say at least four civilians were hurt in Monday's blast.

The U.S. military says Saturday's assault on the prison involved multiple, simultaneous attacks. It estimates the assailants suffered 50 casualties, and says 23 U.S. troops and 13 detainees were wounded.

Suicide Bomber Injures 4 Iraqi Civilians in Second Attack in Three Days Near Abu Ghraib Prison

BAGHDAD, Iraq Apr 4, 2005 — A suicide bomber driving a tractor blew himself up Monday in the second attack in three days near the infamous Abu Ghraib prison.

An attack on the prison Saturday killed one militant and wounded 44 American troops, 13 prisoners and about 50 insurgents, the U.S. military said.

In a separate attack also on Saturday, an American soldier was killed and another was injured after coming under fire in the northern city of Tal Afar, the U.S. military said Monday. The injured soldier was taken to a combat hospital for treatment.

As of Saturday, at least 1,533 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

Monday's bombing killed the attacker and injured four civilians, police said. It was not immediately clear whether the suicide bomber was targeting the prison on the western outskirts of Baghdad.

Abu Ghraib was at the center of a prison abuse scandal last year after photographs became public that showed U.S. soldiers humiliating Iraqi inmates sexually, including having them pile naked in a human pyramid. The United States is holding 10,500 prisoners in Iraq, nearly 3,500 of them at Abu Ghraib.

2. Nothing in the American media, of course
I, for one, believe the Pope's passing is a legitimate and big news story, but you'd think with 24/7 news coverage that they could take a few minutes out to talk about this.

Geesch!

4. I thought it was just me,
The Pope's passing is a big news story, but do I really need to know about young people singing in St. Peter's Square? OPEC ministers are teleconferencing to frantically stem the tide of rising oil prices and this news of another insurgent (rebel fighter) attack on Abu Graib barely gets mentioned. I just wish the MSM would have covered the mass gatherings against the war in Iraq with updates on the quarter hour.

13. CBS/AP story: 44 GIs Hurt In Iraq Prison Attack
44 GIs Hurt In Iraq Prison Attack

BAGHDAD, April 3, 2005

(CBS/AP) U.S. military officials say rebel forces attacked the Abu Ghraib prison west of Baghdad Saturday, injuring 44 U.S. soldiers and 12 prisoners. That report came several hours after officials said 20 U.S. service members were injured in the incident.

At least 40 militants fired rocket-propelled grenades and set off two car bombs Saturday at the prison. Soldiers and Marines stationed at the detention facility responded, and the resulting clash and gunfight lasted about 40 minutes.

An Internet statement purportedly by al-Qaida in Iraq claimed responsibility Sunday. The claim could not be independently verified.

A U.S. military spokesman, 1st Lt. Adam Rondeau, said the attack - carried out by 40 to 60 militants - began as darkness fell on the city. "This was obviously a very well organized attack and a very big attack," said Rondeau.
