New Nuclear Warhead Proposed to Congress -WP
By Walter Pincus
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, April 5, 2005; Page A08

The head of the nation's nuclear weapons programs proposed yesterday that Congress approve funds to study the feasibility of building a new, more reliable nuclear warhead that could be deployed without nuclear testing in less than 10 years.

Saying that the current Cold War stockpile is inadequate technically and militarily, Linton F. Brooks, administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration, told the Senate Armed Services subcommittee on strategic forces, "We want to explore whether there is a better way to sustain existing military capabilities in our stockpile absent nuclear testing."

Recognizing that such a proposal could be highly controversial, Brooks emphasized that a new nuclear warhead is "still just a vision, nothing more," and that even planning for a feasibility study is "at the very early stages of development."

But he insisted that the yields of most of the nuclear warheads in the current stockpiles, built to attack Soviet hard targets, "are probably too high." Because their casings were not designed to penetrate earth, "we have no capability against hardened, deeply buried targets." He also described the current stockpile as "unsuited for some specialized missions" caused by post-Cold War situations.

2. OK
Let me get this straight. We're stopping Saddam and terrorists from having WMD yet we're updating and improving ours?

Anyone else wonder how these fools deal with cognitive dissonance?

3. Americans said they want no country to have Nukes
Another item where the DC people are out of touch with the mainstream.

4. Make it stop.
God, they keep finding new and inventive ways to waste our tax money.

Think about this when doing your taxes if you haven't yet.

Is there some secret tube that's sucking these peoples' brains out while they aren't looking?

Holy Armageddon, Batman! They've got a new warhead! :wow:

6. It's bureaucratspeak...
... for bunker-busters, among other things, and certainly this is meant to support the Bushies' desires to use nuclear weapons on a pre-emptive, tactical basis.

The funny thing here is that the argument about being "too big" is about strategic warheads, which are covered by START II, but the sort of "small" weapons they're talking about are tactical, of which there are still a very large number available.

I think this is a fairly transparent attempt to get Congress to fund a new production cycle, which Congress did not do last year.

7. NO to new nuclear weapons development. If they want to use nukes
for bunker busting, they should use a MIRV Trident with 150 kiloton weapons. 24 or so of them puppies should take care of the problem.

don't be sneaking around. be a manly man! smoking crater time. test your systems & make a point at the same time. bet you won't have to fire off more than two or three of these before folks 'get' it.

8. if true I'm for it

provided, of course, that they scrap more in kilotonnage and numbers of warheads than they add, in the process. The less is kept around the better. Building Down is a good thing.

We're gonna be burning up all the available nuclear material as fuel in any case during the next couple of decades.

9. We were told we needed a case-hardened bomb to get Sadam. . .
because he was going to ensconce himself deep in a subterranean reinforced bunker, impervious to conventional weaponry and only capable of being destroyed by a small nuclear bomb. . . yet when we found him, he was in a relatively shallow spidey-hole covered by a 1/4 sheet of plywood.

Until they can explain the disparities between their fears and our reality, I vote we not give them toys more dangerous than they presently misuse.

18. Amen to that

It's all about big money for big toys for big boys. Idiots.

Tell you what, as more time goes by president Carter's ranking with me gets higher and higher. He really hasa good stance and logic on things like this. Maybe if CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC stop broadcasting, we might get another good president like him someday.

Does this sick individual realize that he is talking about nuclear weapons?

Precisely what has occurred in the Post-Cold War that could possibly warrant a nuclear response...

14. That's the catch...
Current nuclear weapons if used would decimate enormous areas of land and would be off-limits for many years. Personally, that's the only reason stopping Cheney et al from using them. These new and improved tactical nukes, are small enough to obliterfry the target, but not leave the surrounding area a radioactive nightmare.

They want these babies because they want to use them. Simple as that.

17. Designing small "usable" nukes is potentially catastrophic.
What goes around, comes around. Perhaps the oldest principle of human relations.
