Fourth man indicted in Republican phone-jamming scheme
http://www.boston.com/news/local/new_hampshire/articles/2005/04/03/fourth_man_indicted_in_republican_phone_jamming_scheme/

A fourth man has been charged with taking part in a Republican scheme to jam Democrats' get-out-the-vote phone lines on Election Day 2002.

Shaun Hansen, of Spokane, Wash., headed a former telemarketing company that placed hundreds of hang-up calls to five phone lines run by Democrats and one run by the Manchester firefighters union.

Prosecutors say Hansen's Mylo Enterprises of Sandpoint, Idaho, was hired by Republican operatives to place the calls.

Hansen is accused of violating a federal law that forbids placing anonymous telephone calls to annoy or harass someone. He has not entered a plea, but is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Concord on May 9.

3. It happened in Ohio 2004 too.
When I tried to call a voter protection # to report fraud
on 11/3/04 all I got was a forever hold and weird music
with a voice saying, "we are all children of God." Within
1 hour of Kerry concession speech the block was gone
and replaced with a busy signal. I know other Kerry lines
were blocked and hacked too.

I expect the repugs to get right on investigating this. LOL

Look, the proof is out there that the election was stolen but
the media is scared and or bought off and will not report
documented facts about this crime against all of us.

4. And the only charge is...
anonymous/harrassing phone calls? Nothing about interference with voter registration? Nothing about voter suppression?

America is dead.

7. Nobody is innocent

Politics is a dirty game, and both sides like to roll in the filth. To deny that Democrats aren't involved in dirty tricks is embracing ignorance, and such ignorance makes us vulnerable:

Nobody's saying our party is comprised of saints, DUH.

What's OBVIOUS to even the most CASUAL OBSERVER is that the reTHUGS have taken CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR to a whole new level.

Not that it's anything NEW for them.

10. Are we reading the same article?
I didn't see anything about an organized corporate effort. Just that three Republican activists were indicted for hiring a small-town telemarketing firm to place a lot of phone calls. The only thing that makes the charge more serious is that the phone calls crossed state lines, making it a federal issue. Since the Democrats slashed the tires in the state where they lived it is still under Wisconsin jurisdiction.

15. Two important distinctions:
1. "The former executive director of the Republican state committee, Chuck McGee, has pleaded guilty in the scheme and been sentenced to seven months in federal prison."

The five people accused of slashing tires have pleaded "not guilty" and have not yet gone to trial. You speak as though it is established fact.

2. Chuck McGee is "former executive director of the Republican state committee." You don't get much higher up than that.

The accused tire-slashers were low-level staffers.

25. I haven't responded
Because I have little desire to get into an argument about which activists were worse. That's just silly. It would also put me in the unenviable position of defending the Republicans.

I just brought the item up because I wanted to point out that this sort of thing happens all the time, on both sides of the aisle.

11. Nice out
"The attorneys for Omokunde (the son of first-term U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wis.) filed a dismissal motion challenging the felony charge. The motion, in part, stated that while there was evidence at the preliminary hearing that Omokunde slashed one tire, there was no evidence he helped others."

In other words: "Yeah he slashed ONE tire, but that's not a felony."

16. Saying that there is evidence is not the same as saying he did it.
The evidence could be an eye witness account, for example. And that eye witness could be lying.

21. Innocent until proven guilty
Good point. Nothing has been proven, so nothing happened. It follows that Democrats don't engage in election day corruption because they haven't been convicted of anything. We don't have to feel remorse for those in our ranks who engage in this sort of activity, because they haven't proven it even happened yet.

BTW, the person whose indictment inspired you to start this thread, is innocent, and unconvicted as well.

22. We had something similar happen in NJ in 2002
but it was done legally (though it should have been illegal).

Every household in the 5th Congressional district received nightly automated phone calls bashing Democratic candidate Ann Sumers. But every message began with the words "This is a message about Ann Sumers", followed by a very long pause before the bashing commenced. That way, anyone who deleted the messages before the main body could be heard would naturally believe that the messages were in SUPPORT of Ann Sumers, and that it was ANN SUMERS who was sending everyone telephone spam on a nightly basis.

Needless to say, the messages were anonymous (exploiting the lax campaign finance laws), and the Republican candidate, Scott Garrett, claimed "he had no idea who was sending them". Garrett ended up winning the race.
