Dems Declare War over Judicial Nominees
WASHINGTON - It looks like just another press conference. But it is really a bunch of heavy hitting conservative leaders pushed to the front lines in a battle over the presidential judicial nominees.

Democrats have filibustered, or blocked 10 of the President's picks from receiving a Senate vote, saying the nominees are too controversial. Republicans say blocking a nominee is unconstitutional.

Gary Bauer, American Values President, said, "The advice and consent requirement of the United States Constitution leads to the conclusion that these judicial nominees deserve an up-or- down vote on the floor of the United States Senate."

Their letter to Senator Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) details how they want him to move ahead with what is being called the 'constitutional option." In effect, it is changing the Senate rules so it takes a simple majority of senators to confirm a judge, not 60, which is required now. This way, Democrats cannot filibuster a nominee anymore.

2. Why don't the Dems make clear that they've approved 200/210
of Bush's appointees, while the Republicans stonewalled dozens of Clinton's.

Is this such a difficult idea to get across?
In any event, we're better off keeping the filibuster to use when Rehnquist retires & let these 10 go to a vote. Keep the big picture in mind.

4. Former Senator (and majority leader) Mitchell mentioned it
Recently, during the usual Dem weekly rebuttal of Shrub's Saturday radio speech. How the Dems have approved better than 95% of the Chimpenator's nominees -- a number unprecedentedly high. The Repugs blocked WAY more than that during Clinton's term.

Look, what's happening isn't that reasonable people are disagreeing about something, based on inadequate information. We have one political party that is openly attempting to establish a radical right-wing permanent fascist rule (with theocratic overtones). They will lie, cheat, and steal to accomplish their goals -- which is nothing less than the dismantling of American democracy.

5. um....Dems didn't declare the war, repubs did
let's keep that straight, even if the conservative coalition can't.

the Democrats are not the ones threatening the nuclear option and seeking to substantially changed the structure and functioning of the senate. the "war" is being declared, or more correctly forced, by the republicans who are hell-bent on stacking the courts with ideologues and activist judges intent on imposing the conservative agenda on the country.

10. it reflects the CBN's position on the matter
so it doesn't surprise me that they would be following the GOP talking points and helping to frame the issue this way.....just bothers me so much that the debate is then framed in a way to imply the dems are in the wrong on this, and that's how the MSN reports it....

13. Just so
The "war" that's being declared (naturally, by a bunch of chickenhawks who've never worn a uniform or heard a shot fired in anger) is being declared by the Republicans. The Democrats are perfectly happy to play by the rules as written; it's the Republican majority that doesn't have enough tilt in its favor and is racing toward the nuclear option.

6. What not the "nuclear option" anymore. Love the euphemism.
This is going to come back and bite them in the ass when they are no longer in control of the senate, which will happen inevitably as power changes always happen eventually.

They are such short-sighted fools.

19. Not necessarily so short sighted
It actually makes sense if you know ahead of time that your party won't ever be out of control again. Can you say Diebold? I knew you could.........

16. Let them go nuclear
It could be the final nail in their coffin - it couild be declared unconstitutional,. and even if not, when the dems take control in 2006, then they get a nasty taste of their own medicine!

18. Why aren't Democrats better about talking about Clinton's blocked judges?
Is there any strategy going on?

How about a big graph that shows Bush's approved judges vs. Clinton's?

It seems like Democrats suck at getting a simple message out that people will understand.
