Protesters Greet Governor Outside Fund-Raiser (SF Arnold)
Edited on Tue Apr-05-05 10:27 PM by elizsan
SAN FRANCISCO -- A rally involving California Nurses Association members is raging outside a fund-raising dinner for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in San Francisco as thousands of people sing, dance, chant and wave signs, reports association spokesman Shum Preston. http://www.nbc11.com/politics/4348615/detail.html

Looks like the Governator is being terminated. This is ongoing right now, but it is on network news? Nooooo....

1. Nurses, teachers, firefighters, peace activists and seniors

Speakers are blasting songs such as, "Born in the USA" by Bruce Springstein and "You Can Run But You Can't Hide" by Aretha Franklin as the crowd dances along, Preston said.

The crowd of nurses, teachers and firefighters has been joined by peace activists and senior groups, he said.

8. No, she comes from a family with a history
...of treating women poorly, and she is performing according to type. It's in her genetic code, I guess. Also, her end of the tree didn't have as many resources as others, so she needed to make a "good" (read: financially secure) marriage to keep herself in a style sufficient to have nice things and good security. A rather faustian bargain, if you ask me, but who knows what moves or compels people? I think she lacks self-esteem--that guy needed a crack across his thick skull with a cast iron skillet way back when, what with all of his groping, catting around, and crude behavior.

And she should tell him to quit with the hair dye, it's making him stupid. And last, but not least, to get his groping ass back in the gym, and next time he goes for another awful facelift, do something with those titties as well....

4. Now on the SF Chronicle
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/04/06/GOV.TMP

"Protesters surged onto Pine Street a little after 6 p.m., forcing police to shut down the block between Grant Avenue and California Street. Meanwhile, demonstrators 40-deep lined a block of California Street and repeatedly chanted, "Recall Arnold."...

The protest organizers weren't content to limit their efforts to the hotel on Tuesday. The California Nurses Association drove a mobile anti-Schwarzenegger billboard to opening day at SBC Park and had an airplane flying over the city with a banner saying: "Arnold: California is not for sale.""

Go SF unions.

5. There are some great quotes in that one
snip>
Protester Juanita Yee, 40, of Brisbane, showed up to denounce the governor for failing to support public education in the ways he had promised.
"I can't afford private school," said Yee, who has four kids. "It's not an option with a stay-at-home mom and a father who's a union plumber."

Santa Clara fire Capt. Bill Stone had never attended a protest before, but was spurred to do so Tuesday by proposed benefit cuts for public safety employees.
"Firefighters will step up when it's an issue that affects people like teachers," said Stone, who arrived with seven other firefighters from Local 1171 in Santa Clara.

The crowd was largely middle-aged, equipped with signs such as "Grope-n-ator, keep your hands off our retirement" and "Nurses heal, Arnold wheels and deals."

A concession worker at SBC Park went directly from the San Francisco Giants home opener to the protest at the Nob Hill hotel.
"The issues hit close to home for everybody," said the worker, Richard Abrahams, 49.

"This is one thing I love about California, and San Francisco in particular, they don't play around. Bob Brigham is on-the-ground right now, phoning in updates from a large scale protest against California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The event: Arnold's $1,000 to $100,000 a plate fundraiser. Bob referenced it in a post earlier today, here are the updates. It looks like Govenator's re-election will not be as smooth as many anticipate:"

10. Arnold leaves! The people win--10,000 protesters take over
Read the latest--unbelievable! 10,000 take to the streets in SF--and force the Governor to leave. Cops join in with protesters. The power of it all reminds me of the civil rights movement:

http://www.swingstateproject.com/2005/04/ca_gov_2006_the.html#more

Excerpt:

"The sun has set. The streetlights are on. The crowd has laid siege to the building, controlling all entrances, and all streets. The streets belong to the people." -- Bob Brigham

The crowd is chanting that Arnold is chicken. The crowd is now chatning "na na nana hey hey hey good bye" ...The nurses have a staging area at St. Mary's park -- a half block away. The firefighters provided the flatbead truck that serves as a stage with sound equipment to amplify music and speeches. . .

UPDATE:

People were pounding on the Governor's car, while it was speeding out of the garage. Bob said the car peeled out, and you can literally smell the burnt rubber from where he is standing. He fled with his tail between his legs.

The motorcade is following the Governor's car down the street. It's over.

The people won.

12. This gives me goosepimples.
It's unlike the civil rights movement in that the cops were against the protesters in the American south.

It's more like the labor riots in the Northeast, where police did indeed join union members in protests.

This is a people's rebellion. I hope it spreads like wildfire across this great nation.

CA Gov. 2006: "The Tipping Point" (LIVEblog Part 1)

Posted by Tim Tagaris

Excerpts:

...Bob just called me back to let me know that there is a group forming to the side that is going to attempt to block the Governor from even entering the event. Firefighters are all over the place with signs that read, "Not my neighborhood firehouse," and are holding professional looking signs with burning buildings demanding that local firehouses be kept open. Other signs read: "Money for schools not corporate interests"

Bob's quote to me was: "It looks like the tipping point. There is blood in the water. The race is going to be extremely competitive."

...UPDATE: Bob just called back and put his phone in the air to let me hear the chant, "RECALL ARNOLD....They are taking over the street now. The street is shut down... There are green smoke bombs going off--green and gray smoke going off all throughout the crowd.
"We have the street" -- "We have taken the street." "The cops have no interest in restoring control. The police are laughing."

UPDATE 3:

The police just tried just arrest somebody, and the crowd started chanting "shame on you," -- the cops let him go. And now that same guy is leading the march to re-take the street, and Bob is right next to him wearing his BlogPAC hat...The crowd is swelling, Bob puts the number at 10,000 for crowd size. More and more people keep on coming...

UPDATE

"The sun has set. The streetlights are on. The crowd has laid siege to the building, controlling all entrances, and all streets. The streets belong to the people." -- Bob Brigham

The crowd is chanting that Arnold is chicken... The nurses have a staging area at St. Mary's park -- a half block away. The firefighters provided the flatbead truck that serves as a stage with sound equipment to amplify music and speeches.

UPDATE:

...People were pounding on the Governor's car, while it was speeding out of the garage. Bob said the car peeled out, and you can literally smell the burnt rubber from where he is standing. He fled with his tail between his legs.

132. All cities north of SF are called North Bay and...
everything south of SF is considered South Bay. We're very "blue" up here in Sonoma Co. where I live with a few fundies scattered around here and there but they're in the minority.

The people here are very passionate about the issues and are enraged that Schwarzenegger hasn't kept his promises to the voters. Police and firefighters are furious at him and the nurses are equally enraged at his duplicity.

He lied to get elected and has absolutely NO SHAME! His smugness and arrogance are just sickening. He doesn't care about the people at all!

His approval rating is at 55% now and dropping. Too me, that's too high. How anybody could have voted for that creep is beyond my understanding.

He should've known better than to piss off the people he needs to protect him from the masses.

48. We've got a statewide effort going here, with SF leading the pack.
In San Diego, freeway bloggers posted anti-Arnold banners at at least 7 overpasses during rush hour April 1st, warning motorists "Don't Be Fooled By Arnold." Also had a rally downtown with nurses, teachers, etc. speaking out against $chwarzenegger's petitions, which include a ballot initiative to privatize state and local workers' pensions and eliminate survivors' benefits.

Cops stopped by to ask some freeway bloggers to move. When they signs reading "Police and firefighters are the true action heroes!" and "Protect pensions for teachers and police" they grinned, pointed protesters in the direction of very busy intersections where signs could be seen by lots of cars stopped for traffic lights, and even helped one team carry their signs.

53. Code Pink showed up also:-)--and CA Nurses Association

UPDATE

LINK

Code Pink, a group founded by women to protest the war in Iraq, also showed up -- and not the same way as the other protesters.

Instead, they rented a $325-a-night room in the hotel, donned pink wigs and hung an anti-Schwarzenegger banner out a window before hotel security intervened. <...>

The protest organizers weren't content to limit their efforts to the hotel on Tuesday. The California Nurses Association drove a mobile anti-Schwarzenegger billboard to opening day at SBC Park and had an airplane flying over the city with a banner saying: "Arnold: California is not for sale."

"We're going to have a blast,'' said Rose Ann DeMoro, executive director of the nurses group. "We've been protesting at 38 of the governor's fund-raisers since November, and we expect this to be the most significant."

The threat of ungovernability increases by a quantum leap when YOU'VE PISSED OFF THE POLICE!

If these guys stood down this much, they've made a decision. It's not random, it's not an accident.

URL: http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2005/04/06/GOV.TMP

www.sfgate.com

..The crowd out in front of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel shows how the governor miscalculated, she added.

"He's going after people like teachers, nurses, police and firefighters, people who have deep roots in their local communities,'' DeMoro said. "We didn't even do a mailing to get people here. We just talked to our members, and had them call their families and friends.''

Rowdy protests greet governor at S.F. fund-raiser
- John Wildermuth, Carla Marinucci and Patricia Yollin, Chronicle Staff Writers
Wednesday, April 6, 2005

Noisy demonstrators armed with signs and outrage once again greeted an increasingly beleaguered Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger -- this time at San Francisco's Ritz-Carlton Hotel -- when he arrived for a Tuesday evening fund-raiser.

Some people came alone, others with groups. Neophyte protesters mixed with veteran activists. Tourists on cable cars waved and snapped pictures, motorists honked, and the music ranged from "Born in the U.S.A." to "I Left My Heart in San Francisco.".....

71. most of money was already pledged--so arnie still gets the money for
his initives!!

.....Sandra Lowe of the California Teachers Association, who also is a school board member in Sonoma, said, "I'm shocked at the number of people who've come, particularly from the North Bay. It's a beautiful day in the Bay Area, and to fight traffic to come down here -- that's a real commitment."

Doug Bates, 54, a music teacher in the Sonoma Unified School District, was one of those protesters.

"Eventually these cuts will trickle down to the students, and they might eliminate music programs in the schools," Bates said.

The protest wasn't expected to hurt the attendance or the fund-raising because much of the money already had been paid or pledged.

83. Article : Arnold spokesperson says protesters 'paid shills'
It would be beautiful to see an even larger and louder group follow him to San Diego. From article:

Republican Party officials -- and the governor's staff -- kept away from Tuesday's Ritz-Carlton protest. Rob Stutzman, the governor's spokesman, tried to downplay the anti-Schwarzenegger crowds, telling reporters at a Sacramento briefing that those complaining about the governor's agenda were little more than paid shills.

"It's obvious when you go to San Francisco, you're going to get large protests when you're doing something controversial,'' he said "So we're not at all surprised that there will be a large turnout tonight of protesters, many of which are paid, union protesters punching the clock.

"Attributing significance to a large protest crowd in San Francisco -- I think you have to be careful about that. San Francisco is a built-in protest on virtually anything."

Union organizers denied that workers were getting paid to show up at the protest, and Stutzman declined to offer any evidence of payments from the unions.

75. A bus driver was told he was on his own
when he radioed in from the finacial district he needed a new route, this is F'ing hilarious: from Dkos live blog

My bus was rerouted tonite. (3.88 / 9)

My bus leaving the financial district of SF had to call for a reroute, only to be told by dispatch that he was on his own, but could he please call in when he found a way around it! With a busload of passengers!!! I could hear dispatch on the speaker, and they were completely overwhelmed.

He said the route past the venue had been down to one lane, but now he could see up the hill that it was closed. We were able to get around it, but traffic was gridlocked above (NW of) Market St. I saw the preparations for another protest a few weeks ago and the reroutes were all preplanned. This took everyone by surprise.

I had read about the protesters calling for the turnout, and I knew the nurses, teachers and firefighters were PISSED, but this is amazing.

Now if our national non-profits could just get this much balls to confront Delay and the hitler youth about judge-bashing!

Unions Protest at Schwarzenegger Event

Nurses, teachers, firefighters, police and members of several public employee unions have been staging noisy protests against the Republican governor for months. On Tuesday, they aired their complaints outside the Ritz-Carlton hotel in San Francisco.

"He picked the wrong group," said Deborah Burger, president of the 60,000-member California Nurses Association. "We don't have a lot of money, but we have connections with the community."

Schwarzenegger spokesman Rob Stutzman dismissed the protest as a union-inspired event that did not represent average Californians. He said there were risks in "attributing much significance" to the event, alluding to the city's strong union base and tradition for free speech.

135. AP: Unions protest outside governor's fundraiser
SAN FRANCISCO - Unions aligned against Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's package of reforms rallied Tuesday night outside a hotel where the governor was raising money for a slate of potential ballot measures.

About 2,000 protesters demonstrated outside the Ritz-Carlton hotel in San Francisco, where Schwarzenegger was hosting a fundraiser on behalf of proposed ballot measures he hopes to qualify for a special election next fall.

A plan flying overhead carried a banner reading "ARNOLD: CALIFORNIA IS NOT FOR SALE" and some protesters carried signs, once which said, ""ARNOLD CAN'T BE BOUGHT, BIG BUSINESS ALREADY OWNS HIM."

Tim Paulson, the executive director the San Francisco Labor Council, a coalition of unions that helped organize the event, called Schwarzenegger the worst governor in the history of California.

"We are going to stop this fake superhero and really fight to keep it on the streets for the real heroes of California - the working men and women," Paulson said.

A spokesman for the governor dismissed the protest as solely a union-inspired event that didn't represent average Californians.

"Go out and ask these protesters if they are getting paid," said Rob Stutzman, director of communications for the governor. "Of course union protesters get paid to show up."
