By Associated Press

April 6, 2005, 8:43 AM EDT

WASHINGTON -- House Speaker Dennis Hastert was admitted to Bethesda Naval Hospital Wednesday for a routine procedure to remove kidney stones, his office said in a statement.

The 63-year-old Illinois Republican was expected to make a quick recovery, the statement said, providing no other details.

1. Heh.
As divine retribution goes, I will take it.

Looks like he will have to do a little diet modification now. Cut down on the sides of beef he eats.

2. Didn't you mean
"... the side of beef that he is"?

Just wondering.

7. That reminds me of Hunter S Thompson's ...
Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail. Where he's in the bathroom with Nixon. Tricky Dick is standing at the urinal trying to pass a stone and HST is trying to startle him to make him stop and start.

8. I hope he gets the best of medical care.
I'm hoping that sawbones from HBO's Deadwood who's treating Swearengen's kidney stones might be available... :eyes:

"Well that's somethin', anyways!"

9. Yeah, bet he gamed this
"Hastert had been scheduled to leave Wednesday evening for Rome as the head of a 26-member House delegation to the funeral of Pope John Paul II."

When he figured out that he probably would be sitting out in the Piazza, IF HE WAS LUCKY, under the hot sun (or rain), or STANDING in the Piazza, if he was less lucky, he probably said screw it, let me take this opportunity to deal with these annoying kidney stones....and let someone else have the "fun."

When a congress creature goes to Bethesda, it is hellish for everyone but the patient. Half the Pentagon goes over there and kisses ass, bitches at the staff, and mucks up the routine -- it is very annoying for the "not famous" (but more important, actually) patients and the workers in the recovery room.

11. Deadwood!! Has anyone been watching???
You get a good idea of the agony of it with Al Swearingen's recent dealings with it.

They called it a 'gleet'.

Of course medical care back then was not the same as now... I wonder if Hastert has been watching the show???

Nahh.. he couldn't. Too many bad words.....

21. I've heard stories of grown men, big, tough guys
who had survived knifings, passing out from the pain of passing kidney stones.

12. "and it stoned me to my soul, stoned just like jelly roll, and it stoned
me."........a little Van Morrison....:)

It Stoned Me

Half a mile from the county fair
And the rain keep pourin' down
Me and Billy standin' there
With a silver half a crown
Hands are full of a fishin' rod
And the tackle on our backs
We just stood there gettin' wet
With our backs against the fence

Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Hope it don't rain all day

Chorus:
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like Jelly Roll
And it stoned me
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like goin' home
And it stoned me

Then the rain let up and the sun came up
And we were gettin' dry
Almost let a pick-up truck nearly pass us by
So we jumped right in and the driver grinned
And he dropped us up the road
We looked at the swim and we jumped right in
Not to mention fishing poles

Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Let it run all over me

Chorus

On the way back home we sang a song
But our throats were getting dry
Then we saw the man from across the road
With the sunshine in his eyes
Well he lived all alone in his own little home
With a great big gallon jar
There were bottles too, one for me and you
And he said Hey! There you are

Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Get it myself from the mountain stream

Chorus

24. The whole country has been passing a kidney stone for the last 4+ years
I had a kidney stone. They are NO fun. The pain is the worst a male can ever get (I won't compare it to childbirth, having no way to have ever experienced that).

I hope Hastert suffers less than I did. (Well, I actually hope he suffers waaaaaay more, but it would not be nice for me to say that.)

Hey Denny ... wanna piece of this steak?
