By TOM RAUM, Associated Press Writer

ROME - President Bush and his wife, Laura, paid their respects to Pope John Paul II on Wednesday, viewing his remains at St. Peter's Basilica.

Immediately after arriving in Rome, Bush and other members of the U.S. delegation went to the basilica to view the remains. Bush and the first lady were accompanied by his two predecessors, Bush's father and former President Clinton, and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

The knelt in a pew in front of the remains, bowing their heads in prayer.

56. Indeed? I wondered about that. Imagine all those people who've
waited for as much as 18 hours to get a glimpse of the Pope and pay tribute, only to be held back so little lord fuckwad and his entourage can cut in at the front of the line.
No wonder that cardinal (I think he was from New York) said he was certain the next Pope would NOT be an American. Look at what a great image we have with the world? And this helped??!??!??!???!?!? AND - NO JIMMY CARTER???!??!??!?!?!?!?!??!? Talk about adding insult to injury! But of course, the OTHER "mrs. bush" was certainly there. Maybe we should start calling her Camilla Rice.

10. John 11, one of my favorite Bible passages
It's the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the grave. When they get to the grave, Martha tries to stop him from opening the grave because he's been dead for 4 days and he will stink.

The way they are just leaving the pope out in the heat like that, I'm thinking the body must stink pretty badly by now, as I heard he wasn't embalmed. Yuck.

49. Not actually embalmed, but "preserved"
Initially the Italian press reported that Il Papa had been "imbalsamata" or embalmed. Now they are saying that he was injected with preservatives, but not embalmed. Apparently the family mortuary that did it treated other Papal remains in similar ways in the past!

If anybody wants to debate me about the existence of God, moral justice in the universe and so in the future, I think I'll add this visit to the Holocaust and WWII to my argument that if there is a God, he doesn't give a damn what goes on down here.

34. Up to now?
Edited on Wed Apr-06-05 06:02 PM by kenny blankenship
The God supposedly presiding over all this came to Earth and raised one Lazarus from the dead, cured one or two cases of schizophrenic psychosis (for how long we never learned) healed sundry individuals and then fell into a grave silence for the next two thousand odd years while his followers slaughtered each other in his name by the hundreds of thousands, in between bouts of genocide against "heathen" peoples in his name, then He silently witnessed the near extermination of European Jewry, alongside the mass murder of more than 40,000,000 others in a brief span of (Terrestial) time from 1939 to 1945, and sat on his divine healing hands during all of it.

Now another man clearly possessed like Hitler was by a spirit of evil, whose bodycount is not in the millions (yet) but merely the hundreds of thousands, thanks ONLY to the invention of precision weaponry, appropriates the Pope's dead body to masquerade himself as a pious follower of this benevolent God. Nothing happens. He walks into St. Peter's right up to the body, which eventually will be that of a officially beatified saint, and does his evil little victory dance, successfully perverts the meaning of this ceremony, and--
nothing happens.

Lazarus got one hell of a deal; everyone else got a You're on Your Ownski! What deity acts this way?

52. You went way off the point
the point is not that humans do bad things, the point was that God omits to do good things which are clearly in his power to do.

He raised one person from the dead, known for no other reason than this incident, not described as especially good or bad, and who had died of apparently natural causes. Lazarus had had all the life any of us are entitled to it seems, and died, then along came God and reversed the irreversible just for him, apparently just to show that he could do it.

Either that story is a lie or the whole religion that features it is a lie.

he poked him a few times and did that shoulder up and down giggle thing, thinking those around him thought he was a frigging riot.

What an insult to the true mourners who are waiting hours to see the Pope just for just an instant. Bush gets 15 minutes and does what he does at any "obligation" - like running through the museum in St. Petersburg, and high-tailing it out of President Clinton's opening of his library, among other incidents like this. He can't do what manners and protcol require. What an embarassment to the US.

He said he had met "two great popes" in his lifetime, John Paul II and John XXIII.

Wasn't Clinton only a teenager when John would have died?

I didn't think Clinton travelled abroad until he attended Oxford.

29. will he wiggle his eyebrows at the reporters during the funeral?
That's what he did when he was at a memorial service in Texas, as governor. To make matters worse, it was for some poor people who'd been gunned down in a church.

"In a typical anecdote, Bruni describes Bush mugging and wiggling his eyebrows at campaign reporters during an otherwise somber September 1999 memorial service for the victims of a mass murderer who killed seven worshipers in a Fort Worth church..” — Washington Post, January 29, 2002"

51. President Chen goes to Rome for papal rites
President Chen Shui-bian (???) will this afternoon board a charter plane for the Vatican City to join world leaders attending Pope John Paul II's funeral on Friday, the Presidential Office said last night.

The trip to Vatican City will mark the first time ever that a Taiwan president has made a visit to an European country.

According to Presidential Office spokesman Chen Wen-tsung (???), the President will fly directly from Taipei to Rome Italy aboard a China Airlines' charter flight, which is scheduled to leave at 3:40pm. Chen is scheduled to arrive in Rome 2am (local time) Friday morning. The pontiff's funeral is slated to commerce at 10am (local time).
