Talabani proposes amnesty for Iraqi insurgents

http://www.khaleejtimes.com/DisplayArticle.asp?xfile=data/focusoniraq/2005/April/focusoniraq_April24.xml§ion=focusoniraq

BAGHDAD - Iraq’s new head of state Jalal Talabani proposed on Thursday an amnesty for insurgents to “give them a chance” to integrate into the post-Saddam Hussein Iraq. snip

He said insurgents “should be invited to participate in the democratic process and be given the chance to benefit from the acquired freedoms, even if they call for the withdrawal of foreign or occupation forces, as they call them.”

2. Hmmm...US troops are not Iraqi; therefore they ARE IN FACT foreign.
UK troops are not Iraq; therefore they ARE IN FACT foreign.

US & UK are IN FACT the legal occupiers of Iraq; therefore they ARE IN FACT occupiers.

FOREIGN OCCUPIERS.

Now just what would Talabani call them, IN FACT?

3. No way in hell will the "Holy Warrors" give up the battle
Though, it seems like they are focusing this at the local insurgents.

4. That's "quaint"
allowing the "insurgents", who are basically freedom fighters, to have a say about their country. We can't allow that, now, can we?

6. Freedom fighters
Do you really believe that those head-chopping, gay-stoning, misogynistic SOBs are "Freedom Fighters?" Yeah, maybe they want the freedom to reinstate Saddam's rape rooms, or Uday's torture chambers for losing athletes, or the freedom to force all women to wear the veil. What do you think that these "freedom fighters" would do if they had power over those who post on the DU? Do you believe that Baathists and Salafi Jihadists would be more tolerant than fundamentalist Christians, or less tolerant and more violent?

Talabani wants to give an out to Sunnis who took up arms because of the loss of their privilege, their "humiliation." This will leave only the real Jihadis and dead-end Baathists, isolated and vulnerable, fighting a losing battle. And battles are all that there are left. The war for Jihadis and Saddamistas was lost on 30 January, when people came out and voted, despite the threats.

I know that many here at the DU consider these elections a sham, and want to idealize the terrorists whose primary skill is killing Iraqis. Shame on you to wish for the triumph of such scumbags. Shame on you for denouncing a government that will give the Shiite majority power and lift the Sunni oppression under which they have labored since the Ottoman conquest. Where is your commitment to democratic principles and consensual government? Those whose support the insurgents will find themselves in the same moral position as those who supported the "people's revolution" in "Democratic Kampuchea", or who support the DPRK today.

Flame retardant on max.

7. But they didn't invade OUR country
so your question is really moot. Yes, I think that in fighting us, they are fighting for THEIR freedom. We invaded THEIR country, without cause. They were no threat to us. We have killed, maimed and tortured them. We have left them homeless, and without even the basic necessities. WE are the insurgents. WE invaded them.

All of the so-called "insurgents" are not Saddam's former people. Some are just civilians who chose to fight to get us OUT of THEIR country, where we have no business being. I don't think what they are doing is nice, but what the hell did we expect? I don't think what we did was nice either. They are defending THEIR country.

If someone invaded my country, I would damn sure defend myself and my family against them.

WE SHOULD NOT BE THERE.

9. just civilians
Those who are "just civilians" should take Talabani's offer and participate in the new Iraqi political life and advocate for the removal of foreign troops openly and without penalty. Those who want to continue violence to impose their illiberal vision on Iraq should be dealt with decisively.

11. I think we can agree on that
However, I don't think the foreign troops are going to be removed by Iraqi's advocating for it peacefully. I'd be happy to be proven wrong on that one, but I think we plan on staying for awhile, whether we're welcome or not.

8. Head of state? Head on a plate?
No coincidence that all these "leaders" were exiled guys who have returned via cooked up bullshit stories forced down the throats of the US public by fox news and the New York Times.

10. I don't think they have the requisite trust.
Even if "insurgents" were of a mind to compromise, I don't believe the current government would be trusted by them. More likely, this would be a ruse, and those who resist the current status quo know it.

madness has gone on long enough.

13. Isn't this a great ending - war never makes...
any sense in the end. Vietnam is still communist and Iraq will become "Talabani" - and where does that leave all our soldiers?
Wonder if we will take them up on this offer...

And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die."
