A Lovely Day for a Stroll: Bill Clinton In His Element
Edited on Thu Apr-07-05 10:29 PM by Rose Siding
snip>
While Romans were unlikely to catch a glimpse of President Bush - he moved only in motorcades and appeared only at a few official events - Mr. Clinton was clearly reveling in the fact that shoppers, tourists having lunch at outdoor cafes and Italian business people walking to meetings all stopped to greet him.

"Isn't this a great city?" he said. Along the streets, people starting yelling "Bill, Bill, Bill," and a few shouted "U.S.A.!" One shopkeeper raced out with a photograph of Mr. Clinton on a past visit.

Between handshakes and waves, the former president, looking thin, said that he was feeling good after two operations on his heart, but that he tired easily and planned to go back to his hotel for a rest - a change from the way he used to tour cities. He reminisced about his long walking tours of the backstreets of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, during the last long foreign trip of his presidency. "You go around the world and you see a lot of affection for Americans," he said.
.....
Mr. Clinton has appeared greatly relaxed, too, sharing with reporters aboard Air Force One his view of the pope as a politician. The report from journalists on the plane said he recalled John Paul's visit to Newark and how "he came into the back of the cathedral and shook hands all the way down the aisles and had nuns standing on the pews, screaming."

30. The Big Dog was sensational in that interview
A "real man" of the people.

When I was in Europe last year, my relatives were very upset that he didn't have the influence to have our people elected to continue his policies.

I explained to them that DINOS, like limpman and NUT-JOBS like henry hyde, have been destroying our party for the last 4 years, with lies and inaction

3. Oh, to have a real president again…
But Thursday night he was back in his old form. After the dinner with the Italian leader, he went out to a second dinner with President Viktor A. Yuschenko of Ukraine and stayed at an Italian restaurant with him until after midnight.

By that time, * was already sound asleep on his very own pillow.

4. No matter what moron* does, he will always be in Bills shadow...
Bill has charisma, he has style and a personality. This is why the repukes hate him so much. He has everything that moron* doesn't. They pray for someone like him, but they keep stamping out drunk, lying robots. They just don't get it.
God Bless Bill Clinton.
I miss him.

Edited on Fri Apr-08-05 10:47 AM by Jeff in Cincinnati
I didn't always agree with Bill Clinton (NAFTA leaps to mind), but I never got the feeling that he just didn't give a damn about his constituents. He cared about all of them -- not just the ones who wrote the big checks. It's not something you can fake by sounding earnest and delivering a focus-group tested soundbite. Clinton genuinely likes the average person and they return it in kind.

What's up with that? Noticed at the viewing today, the Chimp and druggie looking mate and Sr. were on one end of pew, on the other far end was Kindasleeze and in the center w/plenty of arm space was Clinton.

Still, every where you see Clinton these days he's not far from SR, within arms length.

Somethings strange. Clinton looks sicker than all, and I don't like what I'm thinking.

Edited 'cause I can't spell for crap tonight.

There are a lot of hurdles to overcome, and Bill has to walk a fine line. But it will be good for us, and good for the UN. It could change the whole dynamic for the better.

26. I'm going to look on the bright side of it...
And think that Big Dawg is out there with the Bushes for a reason...to show the world that they DO NOT represent all of America. That we are not all like them, and that there was a time when we were loved, respected, and welcomed in most parts of the world. I'd say this sums it all up...* jr hiding, only going to closed functions, etc...Big Dawg out greeting the people, shaking hands.....

Edited on Thu Apr-07-05 11:06 PM by TwoSparkles
It's so sad. It just makes me wax nostalgic for a time when America had an affable, diplomatic, charismatic abd statesmanlike President.

Figures.

Clinton is out and about--a man of the people--talking, laughing and enjoying the company of others.

Meanwhile, Junior hides out in his hotel room--behaving like a frightened dipshit.

I guess the millions of people in Rome didn't sign loyalty oaths, and couldn't be relied on as card-carrying members of Junior's robotic faithful. So Junior opted to hibernate in the hotel.

What a coward. What an enormous failure.

I'd give anything--to feel a sense of pride about those who currently sit in the White House.

I'm so tired of being ashamed.

13. Guess who's coming to Lancaster County, PA !
It's as far to the right as any place in America. I've lived here for 32 years(!). Now I just spend weekdays here and escape to the shore on weekends.

I can't believe the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a dinner where Big Dawg will speak -- for 90 minutes!

Tix are $150, and went on sale 8am Thursday. We're members, so we were allowed to fax in our order. We began faxing at 7:30 and didn't get it through until 9:45. Plus there were hundreds of people camped in line for hours outside the Chamber offices. I think they will be able to accomodate about 1,500 people. That's a gross gate of $225,000.

The last time Lancaster County elected a Democrat to congress, he became President: James Buchanan -- considered the 2nd worst POTUS ever. That was over 150 years ago.

Now they'll get a chance to hear up close and personal one of the best Presidents ever -- and a Democrat, no less!
:woohoo:

Hope we were lucky enough to get tix.

15. First time I've enjoyed an article about a politician in ages.
That's our Bill. I smiled, just thinking of how wonderful it would have been to have waited on Bill and Viktor at that Italian restaurant, pouring water and wine very slowly, trying to eavesdrop and pick up the tiniest pocket of conversation between them.

Stay healthy, Bill. We've been losing too many friends lately, and I worry about you.

16. I take small comfort in the fact that Bush will *never* be able to stroll
freely in any city in the world like this- he has doomed himself to an isolated, if elite, existence. If he ever "writes" his memoirs, he won't be able to do a book tour like Clinton, won't be able to go to funerals, state events in his role as former president, without the same security he now requires as president. Looks like he'll be clearing a lot of brush in his retirement at Crawford...unless the GOP loses congress in 2006 and we can arrange for an early retirement in one of those nice condos in Leavenworth...

REAL president.

I can just see Bill Clinton leisurely smiling at a friendly crowd of people waving and greeting him affectionately.

Spontaneous interaction between the public and the president is just the kind of thing that makes * Junior want to hide in his closet, wet his pants and suck his thumb.

I saw this title and KNEW it would be criticism of Clinton...

Bush keeps low profile at John Paul II's funeral

hee hee hee- at least he didn't vomit, trip or insult anyone? No! It's ALL about that mean ol' nasty Bill...

ROME -- President Bush, determined not to upstage the funeral of Pope John Paul II, kept an unusually low profile in Rome yesterday, although former President Bill Clinton gave a television interview watched by millions.

"He recognizes the significance of the moment," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said of Mr. Bush. "And the focus rightly should be on the Holy Father."

Mr. Bush became the first president in years to conduct a full day's schedule on foreign soil without allowing a single press question, photograph or even fleeting image on videotape. His father, the first President Bush, also refrained from interviews.

"But President Clinton gave an interview to Brian Williams," said Mr. McClellan, referring to the "NBC Nightly News" anchorman.

It was the second day in a row that Mr. Clinton made headlines as he accompanied the Bushes on a three-day visit to Rome for the pope's funeral. On Wednesday, Mr. Clinton angered some conservatives by remarking aboard Air Force One that the pope "may have a mixed legacy."

Clinton's Chamber talk a sellout
Lancaster (PA) New Era

LANCASTER, PA - Bill Clinton sparks excitement even behind enemy lines here in Republican-dominated Lancaster County. A long line of business community members snaked outside The Lancaster Chamber of Commerce offices on Vine Street this morning. They were eagerly plopping down $150 each for a chance to hear the former president speak at the chamber’s annual dinner on May 4, at Franklin & Marshall College.

Warren Kaufman, 51, of Bainbridge, is a registered Republican who has voted for Democrats in the White House ever since he saw Clinton play a saxophone on “Saturday Night Live.’’ He got up at 3 a.m. to get a ticket with his sister, Stephanie Kaufman, who “loves Bill Clinton to death.’’ Six others were in line by the time the Kaufmans arrived at 4 a.m. Sherry Wolfe of Lancaster started the queue at noon on Wednesday and two other women camped out with her overnight. Lancaster resident Sandy Miller, 58, got to Vine Street early today after learning that Clinton will speak. The co-owner of a local printing company was amazed at how many people were in line.

Calling herself “one of the few Democrats in the county,’’ she quipped that “maybe there is hope for Lancaster County yet.’’ Elizabeth Hine, a local Realtor with Prudential Commonwealth, looks forward to seeing Clinton simply because “I admire him. “I like what he did for the country while he was president,’’ she said. “He put us on track financially. He is a real thinking man who can speak on his feet. I enjoy listening to him speak.’’

... Less than 25 of the 2,100 tickets that chamber members bought before Clinton was named the speaker have been returned ...
