Berlusconi 'Massacred' in Regional Elections
By Robin Pomeroy and Gavin Jones

ROME (Reuters) - Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi suffereda stinging defeat at Italian regional elections, partialresults showed on Monday, a huge boost for center-left leaderRomano Prodi's hopes of unseating him next year.

Berlusconi's center-right coalition appeared to have lost11 of the 13 regions at stake, only sure of maintainingLombardy and Veneto -- both in its stronghold in northernItaly.

Prodi, who had said he would be satisfied by winning justone new seat, was delighted by his landslide victory.

"Today we have easily won in terms of the number of votesand the number of regions," he told a news conference.

Jets force plane down near Rome

Italian military jets have intercepted a plane flying over the capital Rome where world leaders had gathered for the funeral of Pope John Paul II.

Two F-16s forced the aircraft - heading to the city's Ciampino airport - towards a local airport, Italian news agencies said.

There might have been a bomb on the plane, intelligence and military sources said.

A massive security operation has been under way all day around the capital.

3. Yeah, smells fishy.
I'm sure the Pope's funeral (especially with Bush in attendance) would be a target any Islamic fundie terrorist would want to hit.

But even if a suicide bomber in a small plane were able to get so close (not likely), why would they then let jets force them to land? Why not just attempt to crash it?

11. Except for Bush, why would any Islamic terrorist hit the funeral?
The late Pope reached out to other faiths as none previously. (At least, in recent centuries.)

And the Crusades happened a LONG time ago....

13. hmmm...maybe because every head of state was present?
Oh no, that couldn't be the reason. Islamic jihadists ONLY hate Bush and no one else. All of the attacks they've carried out worldwide have solely been fueled by their hatred for Bush, right?

I remember how the Middle East was a paradise filled with love and democracy until January 2001.

16. Islamic jihadists have no love lost for the pope.
We're not talking moderate Muslims here. We're talking terrorists (allegedly). I think they'd find the pope's funeral a tremendously symbolic target, even without Bush.

And as far as the Crusades happenning a LONG time ago... well, the Muslim world has a VERY LONG memory.

22. Reminds me of the story about a woman who left her child in her car
in a mall parking lot while she went to work. Someone called the police, one of whom was quoted as saying that it was it was kind of car where the child "could have crawled into the trunk area." So of course the story went out that the child had been locked IN the trunk!
