Lookin' for a cheap date? Try Wal-Mart
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Just when you thought you'd heard it all from the king of discount shopping, Wal-Mart is now pitching itself as the new dating hot spot -- with everyday low prices to boot.

In fact, the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer's been playing Cupid to hundreds of lonely single German shoppers for well over a year now.

According to company spokeswoman Amy Wyatt, Wal-Mart's been running its "Singles Shopping" campaign in all of its 91 stores in Germany.

Here's how its works.

On Friday nights, singles looking for romance, mindless flirting or just a new friend head over to their neighborhood Wal-Mart where they're given a big bright bow to attach to their shopping cart or their shopping basket.

Uhhh, guess if you like a girlfriend with no teeth...

6. I heard a comment about a year ago...
that they have only closed three stores...ever. And all of them were in Germany.

Reason: Locals followed up pre-opening protests with after-opening boycotts.

Can't remember the source; anyone else have any knowledge of this?

19. They just closed one in Canada. Guess why?
Because the uppity ingrate Canucks :sarcasm: dared to form a union, that's why.

Only in Soviet Canuckistan would people turn up their noses at US$7 per hour plus crappy benefits! :sarcasm:

30. Is that how we get them to leave our community? Get a job there
and organize a union? What if we could do this in half their stores? Would they just shut them down and walk away?

2. And yet:

--snip
The code forbids Wal-Mart employees from accepting presents from suppliers, dictates that employees may not fall in love with a colleague in a position of influence and requires workers to report colleagues immediately "if they observe that they have broken the rules." Non-compliance of the rules can lead to termination.

7. Before Wal-Mart moved into my state...
...a friend told that it was a great spot to see "a pregnant women who's smoking and has half naked kids running around her bare feet".

I figured he was just saying that the shoppers there were unsophisticated.

A few months later I went into one.

Well, at least she wasn't smoking at that particular moment.

Date away.

15. There are 91 Wal-Marts in Germany?
Wow, I had no idea that had so many there.

I know Wal-Mart is also the largest private employer in Mexico, although usually under a variety of store names. Also, they put up a big box less than a mile from the Temple of the Moon in Teotihuacan. Heartbreaking...

24. And they say romance is dead
gee, you really shouldn't have splurged on the Double cheeseburger!
This is hilarious.

The one time somebody took me to Walmart on a date would be the last time I ever saw that person. Aside from the fact that walmart is an evil corporation I never set foot in if I can possibly help it, it is just completely classless to go there on a date. Are the dollar movies too expensive??
