Vet's Silver Star license plates revoked

SPRINGFIELD -- Joe Wilkins helped persuade the state to issue special license plates for winners of the military's Silver Star. Now his own Silver Star plates have been revoked amid questions about whether he really earned the prestigious medal.

Wilkins, a leader in Springfield civic affairs and a retired business professor at the University of Illinois at Springfield, served in the Air Force. He has said he was awarded a Silver Star and two Purple Hearts for his work, some of it top secret, during the Vietnam War.

Military record questioned

But Secretary of State Jesse White's office said Thursday it revoked Wilkins' Silver Star license plates because a review showed the documents he submitted to obtain the plates didn't prove he was awarded the medal.

''Anyone who tries to benefit from the heroic acts of others does a disservice to all who serve and who were honored for their heroic deeds,'' White said in a statement.

4. The probability of no record awarding a Silver Star in Vietnam is zero.

It is conceivable someone promised him one or even submitted an application but that is not the same thing as being awarded one.

One article says, "Wilkins' U.S. Air Force personnel file shows he was a 'good and competent' intelligence officer during the Vietnam War and earned a Bronze Star, according to the IT."

Another article says "For his work, the U.S. Air Force awarded Wilkins a half-dozen medals, including the Bronze Star for meritorious service. The South Vietnamese military awarded him a Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star."

I wonder what causes people to attempt such a blatant lie! :shrug:
