Nazi Horrors at Buchenwald Recalled on Anniversary

BUCHENWALD, Germany (Reuters) - Frail and elderly survivorsof the Buchenwald concentration camp on Sunday remembered its"40 hectares of cold and horror" as they commemorated the 60thanniversary of its liberation.

In what many agreed would be their last such gathering, thesurvivors mourned the thousands killed by the Nazis and urgedthe young to remember their suffering and be vigilant againstanti-Semitism and far-right violence in today's Europe. snip

Unlike Auschwitz in Poland, Buchenwald was not one of thedeath camps where the Nazis set about their "Final Solution" --the systematic extermination of European Jews.

Nonetheless, it was equipped with crematoria and gaschambers and 56,000 perished, around 11,000 of them Jewish.
