Unlike Auschwitz in Poland, Buchenwald was not one of thedeath camps where the Nazis set about their "Final Solution" --the systematic extermination of European Jews.
Nonetheless, it was equipped with crematoria and gaschambers and 56,000 perished, around 11,000 of them Jewish.
