Iraqi couple starts anew in U.S. after kids killed by Marines
snip>
As they drove past the city's northern gates, Daham Kassim saw two U.S. Marine tanks and stopped the car immediately, about 60 yards from the tanks.

It was a clear day, and he anticipated a routine road check -- this was before Iraqi insurgents began blowing up cars at U.S. checkpoints. But instead, the tanks fired at the car.
....
The soldiers rushed the couple and their surviving daughter, Zainab, 5, who had been hit in the head, to the Immam Ali air base, then occupied by the U.S. military. The parents and child were bandaged and given pain pills, he said.

"We saw no doctors," he said.

On their second night there, he said, he heard a male voice order him in English to move his family outdoors. Some wounded U.S. troops were rushed indoors. The family was deposited on a street. He could not yet walk. "It was very cold -- very, very cold," he said.

The little girl shivered. "I am cold, Papa, I am so cold," he recalled her saying, with tears running down his face. Neither he nor his wife could use their arms to hold her and share body warmth with her.

2. I cried until I read this part:
Despite the horror the war inflicted on his family, Kassim still believes it was better for Iraq that the Americans removed Saddam.

How in the world can this man say that? The fucking Americans killed his kids and severely injured him and his wife!!

6. I think he wants to get on with his life, and so he desperately
needs to cling to whatever good he can find, no matter how much he has to stretch the rationalization.

My heart goes out to him and his wife.

9. I'm sure that saying that was additional payment
to get into this country and out of the war. 4 kids and a statement get you in. What a shame are we not supposed to be better than this?

3. OK, he's in St Louis, where by huge coincidence, not only his
current employer lives, but also his sister and her anti-Saddam husband live and run a center dedicated to spreading the word about how bad Saddam is (and I assume, how good we are); all 4 kids are dead, but they need fertility treatments; he agreed to work for the same country who killed his kids; he agreed to travel to the same country which killed his kids?

something not quite getting past the sniff test here.......

7. Sucking Uncle Sam's crank
so he'll let him stay in the US. Admirable, considering that we killed his other children w/o provocation.

What a human piece of shit! The US deserves him. We broke him, we bought him.

10. Political correctness, victim, or opportunist?
I guess all three if the guy wants to survive a return to Iraq one day.
