SABRINA EATON

Ohio Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell took his gubernatorial aspirations on the road this April Fool's Day with a fund- raiser at the City Club in Washington, D.C., that netted at least $35,000

GOP luminaries listed on his event's fund-raising committee included former Reagan administration Cabinet secretaries William J. Bennett, James C. Miller and Edwin Meese; Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas; Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform; the Heritage Foundation's Paul Weyrich; and David Keene of the American Conservative Union.

Blackwell said the roster shows he is backed by the national con servative community, and it's "not only luminaries, but folks that put troops on the ground with networks in Ohio."

Blackwell and his spokesman, Gene Pierce, said not all of the listed luminaries appeared, although former Housing and Urban Development Secretary and presidential candidate Jack Kemp attended. Blackwell served as a HUD undersecretary under Kemp...

1. Ohio Republicans are asking for his withdrawal though.
And also, there is a movement in Ohio to find others. Anybody know who the dems are running? It's time right now to work on election '06 even in an unofficial capacity. The time is now to go door to door and be the media.

The Democracy Cell Project is trying to help people become activists in their own area. WE do not need to wait for Dean or anyone to get the word out about all this Republican corruption. It's about teaching people now and not waiting until next year to get out the message.

9. Well, whoever runs against Blackwell should stand tall and honest.
Edited on Sun Apr-10-05 11:19 AM by ray of light
As far as I'm concerened, it's a no-brainer...Blackwell equals the worst side of government corruption...Whoever runs just needs to say, "I on the other hand will stand for HONESTY, TRUST, and COMMITMENT to the COMMON GOOD OF THE PEOPLE OF OHIO--NOT JUST TO ONE PARTY BUT FOR ALL."

Whenever they find someone to run, I will be there speaking the truth and helping. Frankly, I think Blackwell's chances of winning are slimmer than most people might think. He is the biggest and best example of slime--of course next to Delay and Frist and Bush and Cheney (of course)--and his candidacy will help get a legitimate governor into office.

Oh, and btw, thanks for the warm welcome. (I was a little nervous after lurking all this time.)

8. if he has to withdraw, he'll do the talkshows
that's the way this crowd is, they are not idealists, they are strictly into to cash and carry, if the Ohio blunder no longer provides him with political capital, he'll be the first to ask for immunity.

15. Jerry Springer will not be running for Governor
Mike Coleman is the democratic candidate, and the DNC and state party are on board with him.

There will be no Dem primary...but the republicans will have to raise double the money because their primary will be a three-way, brutal mudslinging affair.

Meanwhile, Mike Coleman has put his signature on Clinton's presidential campaign bus...on loan to him from the DNC.

4. Heh Heh...Blackwell....Mike Coleman has the use of Clinton's
Edited on Sun Apr-10-05 10:51 AM by mtnester
presidential bus for his campaign...he has had it for awhile....the DNC is serious about taking back the governor's office here...

and Blackwell, you better raise a damn fortune cause you are going to have a 3-way primary that is going to be brutal and EXPENSIVE...$35,000 was all you could raise at one sitting in DC? That won't buy you one days' worth of what you will need to win the primary....

Meanwhile, Mike Coleman is fund raising and making the rounds, not using any cash and raising it hand over fist, with the DNC arm around his shoulder.

Ohio will be fun to watch this primary season kiddies...will probably be the most brutal ever governor Republican primary in history. ALL the good stuff will come out, because Jim Petro and Betty Montgomery want the job too, and if you think they won't tattle what they know to knock your butt out of it, you are delusional.

Buh Bye Kenneth....been real, but it sure ain't been nice

6. If Blackwell's is elected Gov
Can he carry out his duties from the slammer, I have read that there
is now a special prosecutor investigating recount irregularities Cuyohoga County.

Pasted from another DU thread by FtWayneBlue
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x1383306
Cuyahoga County Prosecutor William Mason appointed Baxter as a special prosecutor in the case because the board of elections is Mason's client, which could pose a conflict of interest, said Mason spokeswoman Jamie Dalton.

7. Please, Ohio DUers. Do what you can to out-organize --
-- Blackwell.

We need some high-profile Ohio Democrats. The governor's chair would be a good start.

We send you good vibes!

10. James C. Miller sits on Postal Board of Governors
Edited on Sun Apr-10-05 12:14 PM by rehema
James C. Miller is trying to use his influence to privatize the postal service. Conservatives believe people should be given a choice between paying 37 cents for a stamp or $2.00 delivered by Fedex or something of that nature.

I forgot to say
Why does Blackwell need a whole lot of money when he has CHEATING does to a science.

11. Kathy B deserves to go to the Big House, but not the one he thinks.

Look at the list of crooks that are his "luminaries", and who didn't even all show up.

His contempt for democracy and the Constitution make him eligible for may years of state-funded boarding and meals off a tin plate with compartments.

I pray he gets it.

14. I had so hoped Martin Sheen would throw his hat in.
He'd clean their clocks. I wish there were some way to convince him.

We are DESPERATE in Ohio for honest, strong leadership after years of decay with do-nothing, incompetent, right-wing blowhards. :(

17. Get Active now...and let me know of a local group
Edited on Sun Apr-10-05 08:05 PM by ray of light
I don't know how this works, but if you know of community groups to join, maybe you could pm me because I certainly want to be there organizing and volunteering RIGHT now.

I strongly urge all of us who definately care--that's why we're here--to do whatever is necessary to set up local grassroots campaigns, to become the media, to develope a message, and to keep on track with your state government. 5 minutes a day...we all can spare 5 minutes to make postings, to create t'shirts with a message, to send letters or to make calls to congress. The national is important but so is the state.

I saw an interview with a HAVA representative on the Democracy Cell Project that some person did and that person mentioned how IMPORTANT it is that we Learn and call and vote and wait in line for hours. Here's the link: http://www.democracycellproject.net/blog/archives/2005/03/putting_thought.html#comments

In fact, I remember seeing in the DCP book chat an excerpt from Howard Zinn's You Can't be Nuetral on a Moving train...(they're having a book club discussion but I saw this on the blog) here..let me see if I can find it...It was in this thread... http://www.democracycellproject.net/blog/archives/2005/04/finding_a_secur.html#comments Posted by: sparrow at April 9, 2005 06:22 PM

And if you read the excerpt you will see some similarities to what happened to prevent blacks from registering to vote. Blackwell just used the same suppression methods that existed in the 60's and earlier.
