LEWISTON — A children's television show starring a cartoon rabbit generated impassioned discussion as well as a few tears and harsh words Saturday at a public meeting to help decide whether a controversial episode of the program should air in Maine. Colliding views on same-sex marriage, the role of public broacasting, and what constitutes appropriate material for children's television were heard from about 25 members of the public at the meeting of the Maine Public Broadcasting Network's Community Advisory Board.

Several people who opposed showing the episode held or quoted from the Bible as they spoke of what they considered the presentation of a sinful lifestyle to children. Many supporters of the program said censoring it would amount to labeling gays and lesbians as second-class people.

"What I see is not a tempest in a teapot but rather an agenda, and that agenda is the dehumanization of a sector of our society," said John Costin of Kennebunk, adding that, as a Jew, he found this deeply disturbing. "I see this as the thin end of the wedge," he said

After an hour of public comment, Costin's 11-year-old son, Silas, was in tears. His father said he was upset by Douglas Taylor's characterization of gay people.

"I described the homosexual life as dirty. I wasn't calling you dirty," Taylor told the boy.

"If my son were to say things your family and friends did were dirty and disgusting - that would hurt," Costin said.

1. "...the thin end of the wedge..." THAT is magnificent! Dems should use it
constantly!

The wedge equates with 'Divide and Conquer.' Surely this three word phrase is one all Americans can 'get.' Repubs believe they can divide and conquer the country using wedge issues.

A simple visual of a wedge, presented in ads, would allow the simplest mind to understand. Point to the 'thin end of the wedge' and list ALL regressive wedge issues (gays, god, evolution...). This thin edge is them getting their toe in the door, starting to force their way in.
