US Destabilization Attempts Will Continue Says Venezuela's Chavez
US Destabilization Attempts Will Continue Says Venezuela’s Chavez

Monday, Apr 11, 2005

By: Sarah Wagner — Venezuelanalysis.com

Venezuela's Chavez during his weekly television program, this time from Carabobo state.

Caracas, Venezuela. April 11, 2005—Yesterday, during his weekly television program Aló Presidente, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez accused the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) of engaging in military maneuvers against Venezuela. Chavez said that there were “war exercises that NATO is practicing…and do you know what their objective is? Venezuela."  He said these war exercises were called "Operation Balboa."

This week's edition of Alo Presidente coincided with the third anniversary of the two-day coup that briefly overthrew Chavez, disbanded Congress, the Constitution and the Judiciary and declared Pedro Carmona as "interim president." Chavez, who was detained in several military bases for 47 hours, was restored to power due to the mobilization of his supporters, the support of loyal military officers, luck, and the authoritarian actions of the interim government.

According to Chavez, these attempts to destabilize and topple his government "will continue because they are putting it into the head of military officers of NATO that Venezuela is the objective…that the enemy is Venezuela."

When asked to explain what constitutes the difference between an internal Mexican matter and an internal Venezuelan matter during a State Department press conference this morning, State Department spokesperson Richard Boucher refused to respond, repeating "I am not going to comment on it," and, "same question, I'm sorry."

1. To review the situation.
This is what I would call an endurance game. The party which has the longest staying power wins. It's not necessarily based on brute strength, either. Warfare isn't always about having the biggest guns. Stan Goff wrote that winning a war is purely psychological; and that warfare is in fact public relations.

On the one hand, we have Chavez who is the oil supplier. He is currently signing deals with Spain, Russia, Cuba, India and collaborates with Iran. He is trying to sign oil deals with China. Venezuela doesn't have any particular strength against the US., if the US were to bomb, Chavez would definitely lose.

On the other hand, we have the US. Failing Hegemon, whose lifestyle is spinning out of control. Its economy is on life support. It's only a matter of weeks, months before the US public catches on. The US is most definitely desperate to make an aggressive move against Ven.

Venezuela doesn't need the US. The US most definitely needs Venezuela. It will be very interesting to see what happens over the next few weeks. I can tell you which side is more desperate...:smoke:

5. chlamor, thanks.
I must confess, I do a lot of independent reading on the Internet - non-party affiliated. There are some awesome writers.

BTW, you're one of my favorite writers here.

4. Nice analysis
Chavez is refusing to cower, either rhetorically or in forging alliances.

A very interesting game is afoot. Good luck, Chavez; good luck, Venezuela.

3. Chavez is using Venezuela's natural resources
to benefit all of his people. His democratic socialist system is bringing high economic growth (close to 30% per year) and is also helping to abolish poverty.

Right-wing monetarists can't let the democratic socialist system succeed, it's far too dangerous to them. Especially if people start to demand similar styles of socialism in other countries.
