Press Freedom Groups Report Killings of Journalists in Haiti, Mexico
Apr 12, 2005 Washington
Global advocacy groups for press freedom have reported the recent killings of two reporters: one in Haiti and the other in Mexico.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said the Haitian reporter Robenson Laraque, who worked for the private radio station Tele Contact, died April 4 of wounds from being shot while observing a clash between United Nations troops and ex-members of the Haitian military in the city of Petit-Goâve.

The New York-based CPJ reported Laraque was wounded March 20 during a confrontation that began after the ex-soldiers occupied the police station in the Haitian southwestern city. Three other people, including a Sri Lankan peacekeeper, died in the gun battle.

Laraque and several colleagues were observing the confrontation from the nearby balcony of Tele Contact's offices, when the journalist was struck by two shots to the head and neck.

1. The Imperial American government
has made it a legitimate act to kill reporters. It would be best if the "reporters" just attended the news conferences and stayed out of the actual areas of conflict - if they know what's good for them.

2. Journalists risk life and limb in northern Mexico
Wresting a sad distinction from war-torn Colombia, northern Mexico is one of the most dangerous places to be a journalist in the Western Hemisphere, media watchdog groups say. Attacks in the past week alone have left one editor dead, one reporter missing and another barely alive after she was shot nine times.

Iraq, where 19 journalists were killed last year, and the Philippines, where six reporters were killed last year and two so far this year, are considered the most dangerous countries for reporters.

But while Colombia seems to be improving -- only one reporter has been killed so far this year -- northern Mexico "has been worse than Colombia" in terms of the danger for journalists this year, said Lucie Morillon, a spokeswoman for the Washington office of the French watchdog organization Reporters Without Borders.

Davidson, cochair of an international group called Lawyers
Against the War (LAW), says she is the only person in the
world who has ever laid criminal charges against Bush. On
November 30, 2004, Davidson walked into Vancouver
Provincial Court and convinced a justice of the peace to
accept seven Criminal Code charges against Bush while he
was visiting Canada. She brought evidence to support her
contention that Bush should be held criminally responsible for
counselling, aiding, and abetting torture at the Abu Ghraib
prison in Iraq and at a U.S. military jail at Guantanamo Bay,
Cuba. Each offence carries a prison sentence of up to 14
years.

As she got older, her approach evolved from direct action to pragmatic
cooperation. Her mother recalled an early episode when President Bush
visited Sacramento during the California energy crisis.

"She mooned the president," her mother said. "The back of her underpants
said, 'Public Power Now.' When she turned back around, the president
looked her in the face -- he was only about a foot away -- and said, 'Cute.' "
