Security scare at U.S. Capitol

WASHINGTON — A man who brought two suitcases to the U.S. Capitol and asked to see the president prompted a standoff yesterday that ended when police tackled him. They later blew apart one of his bags.

Authorities said the suitcases did not contain explosives and that no one was seriously injured in the incident, which halted tours and closed streets.

The man, a 33-year-old Australian citizen, had not been publicly identified last night. He had recently arrived in the United States, police said.

Investigators were expected to charge the man with disorderly conduct for allegedly failing to obey a police officer, top police officials said.

4. There used to be a room at St. Elizabeth's Mental Hospital in DC
(maybe there still is) where Secret Service would take anybody who would show up at White House gates and ask to speak to the President. Apparently it happened quite often, often enough at least to have this special room set aside to keep the person awhile for observation or whatever they do with them.

This of course was in the days when you could actually walk up the gate and walk in the White House, which is not the case today. You probably can't get anywhere near the White House gates. Maybe this is why the poor guy went to the Capitol building, a mile away, and asked to speak to the Prez from there.

5. I believe they shut down St. Elizabeth's
a long time ago. In fact there doesn't seem to be a decent regular hospital in all the eastern side of the city.

8. St. E's is still operating, about 450 patients currently
mostly long term, such as the guy who shot Reagan (whatever his name is) last I heard, which was a few weeks ago. They are, however, going to tear down some of the buildings or renovate and downsize to hold about 250 patients, if I remember correctly.

Several years ago, I remember reading that AOL was considering purchasing the St. Elizabeth's acreage and converting the old red brick 19th century buildings on the hilly grounds into an AOL campus of sorts. Guess they nixed that idea.

2. cop on CNN said theye took him to the hospital
and the hospital released him back to immigration where he'll hopefully be deported (yeah, I'll bet). Cop admitted the man did nothing wrong, he just didn't look right. Said when they spoke to him he muttered that he wanted to see the president.

3. Only contained ONE dollar bills
Viewed as an insult to the Bush organization especially since the dollar was devalued. Twenties maybe will get you lunch with Rumsfeld. Canadian dollars in hundreds will get you a night in the Lincoln bedroom. In Euros, a trip on Air force One with a chance to try the armaments when overflying a Democratic fundraiser.

6. They blew up the man's luggage
Pants, underwear, socks and a pair of shoes all over the place. Oh, and the shattered remains of his CD player.

Welcome to Bush's America...
