Abortion clinics, federal agents on alert

Bracing for reaction in wake of Olympic bomber’s manifestoThe Associated Press
Updated: 8:51 p.m. ET April 14, 2005ATLANTA - Abortion clinics around the country are bracing for attacks after Olympic bomber Eric Rudolph issued his manifesto justifying the use of violence to stop “the worst massacre in human history.”

“When one of these extremists puts out a call to action, oftentimes others do try to follow in their footsteps,” said Vicki Saporta, head of the National Abortion Federation, which represents 400 U.S. clinics. “He clearly is speaking to the extremists who believe in justifiable homicide.”

Rudolph will get four life sentences without parole after pleading guilty Wednesday to carrying out the deadly bombing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and attacks at two abortion clinics and a gay nightclub. The blasts killed two people and wounded 123.

A federal prosecutor said Thursday she’ll recommend that a $1 million reward go to two men who tracked Rudolph moments after the last deadly blast, and who provided authorities with a license plate number eventually traced to Rudolph’s pickup truck.

In an 11-page manifesto handed out by his attorneys, Rudolph said the Olympic bombing was an attempt to embarrass the United States in front of the world for allowing abortion.

‘Abortion is murder ... force is justified’

9. If he was a Muslim Arab
he would have vanished into Guantanamo, and any lawyer that tried to defend him would find themselves subject to investigation for furthering a terrorist.

Imagine a member of Al Qaida issuing this sort of threat post-sentencing. What do you think would happen to that person?

2. well gee ..maybe said "manifesto" should not have been
broadcast far and wide

How many murderers get to hand out the rough draft of their upcoming book to the press for dissemination?

Why would anyone be surprised if other nut-cases hear the call to arms?

To add to what is already a potentially dangerous situation by giving the scum publicity?

It's potentially dangerous because there exist other nuts like Rudolph who just need a little push to go over the edge.

5. Yep...too odd
like just another "terror" alert.

Nevermind the build up and the way the media handles such things can have a direct impact on people's thinking..and their actions. You don't feed the crazies.

It's manipulation...pure and simple.

4. As DeLay's ship sinks slowly in the west, MSM seems to still be trying to
divert attention while also pumpimg up the fringe on hate and bile.

Man, I want my country back.

10. Lynne Stewart was prosecuted for less than this.
Doesn't seem to be consistent treatment.

15. I rather liked how the Atlanta Journal Constitution handled it today
Eric's rant appeared where the op-eds from asshole fundie wingnuts typically go.

I wonder how many readers will even notice that it's a tad more radical than the typical op-ed from an asshole fundie wingnut.

maybe it was a tad irresponsible of the AJC, but hey, I got it.

7. This creep is a domestic Bin Laden
and the Fed's allow the psychopath to scream FIRE in a movie theater??

Domestic terrorism is a far graver threat than the Bin Laden gang -- who is a creation of the US -- thanks to the US funded insurgency against the Russian Afghanistan government.

8. Rudolph, McVeigh, Furrow etc...
Why no "war on domestic terrorism"?

They're all Registered Republicans.

That "war" would hit too close to home.

11. Ain't that the ever-lovin' truth.
Republicans are never at a loss to justify the blood on their own hands.
