Tense moments at UW protest
An otherwise peaceful student protest against the war in Iraq and military recruiting on campus briefly turned threatening at UW-Madison Thursday when police disconnected the groups' speaker system.

Flipping the switch effectively silenced remarks by Jane Jensen, leader of Military Families for Peace and the mother of a Blackhawk helicopter pilot who served in Iraq.

Shouts of "No police state" immediately rang out, as the group of 100 or so students and community members protesting in front of Bascom Hall swung their attention to a half-dozen campus police officers impassively watching the proceedings from behind the makeshift staging area. <snip>

"If you try to take the bullhorn out of our hands, we won't let you!" Feingold continued, turning to address the police. "We have the right to free speech. We're not going to take oppression from the cops." <snip>

4. UW students walk out of class to protest military
<snip> The students, who walked out of classes at 11 a.m. on a beautiful spring day, also called for an end to the war in Iraq during the protest in the center of campus.

"This war is for profit. War and occupation can never bring liberation," the group of about 200 chanted and clapped. <snip>

7. "...our job is to make sure everybody can be heard."
Right: by silencing the only ones speaking.

Pathetic cop.

8. Madison is such a good progressive town.
It's a shame it is surrounded by a lot of more conservative areas...

I hope those guys up there keep safe in the days to come. I sure as hell don't want to see Madison become synonymous with violence like Kent State did.
