Hollinger boots Black out of Toronto HQ

First they forced him to sell his flagship publication. Now they want the keys to one of his most prestigious buildings. Lord Black of Crossharbour, the fallen former Telegraph proprietor, is being evicted from his fashionable downtown offices in the heart of Toronto's financial district.

Hollinger Inc has issued an eviction order on Ravelston Corp, Lord Black's private holding company, ordering it out of the historic three-storey building at 10 Toronto Street and requiring Black and his colleagues to hand over the keys by the end of May.

This further turn of the screw will be painful for Lord Black, who presided over the remains of his shrivelled empire from a second-floor office in the building.

The building - which was occupied by the Bank of Canada over 100 years ago - was inherited by Lord Black when in 1978 he took control of Argus Corp., then one of the country's biggest corporations, which had had its offices there during the 60s and 70s.

Conrad Black is despicable as are his cronies Perle, Kissinger, etc. I would love to see Mr. Black and his witch of a wife out on the streets, begging for pennies but, sadly, that won't happen so I have to settle for humiliation and eviction for now.

They might even be forced to give up the corporate jet and go back to flying with the riff-raff in first class. :)

Conrad Black: Lager-heir to London lord

He was born Conrad Moffat Black on August 25, 1944, in Montreal. His father, George Black, was a wealthy brewery executive.

He studied his way to a history degree at Carleton University, a law degree from Laval and an MA from McGill.

In his 20s, Black began buying small Canadian newspapers and, in 1971, he co-founded the Sterling Newspapers Group. In 1978, he became chair of the Argus Corporation – a position he used as a launch-pad to start the Hollinger group. By the 1990s Hollinger controlled 60 per cent of Canadian newspaper titles, as well as hundreds of dailies in the U.S., England, Australia and Israel.

Black became known for taking over newspapers and chopping away the fat (and much of the meat as well), resulting in job losses. Criticism aside, these newspapers often turned a profit within a year. So large was his appetite for newspapers that at one point, he was the third-largest newspaper publisher in the world. At its peak in 1999, Hollinger had revenues over $2 billion.
