Searches of priest's homes called off
http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-priest20.html

MILWAUKEE -- The Archdiocese of Milwaukee has backed off a policy for now that would have allowed church officials to search the homes or computers of priests accused of sexual misconduct.

Archbishop Timothy Dolan said Tuesday he would not put the policy into effect without ''vigorous consultation'' with priests.

1. Translation: Clean 'em up now...
...so we won't find anything we'd have to act on.

2. Doesn't law enforcement take priority in such investigations?
If a priest molested my kid I would go to the police - certainly not the church, not now.

Cover-up is their SOP. I have followed the abuse scandal loosely but I never caught the reason that most priests don't get arrested. Are they immune to local law enforcement prosecution?

If a church official commits a crime and the church starts to seize evidence then the church is interfering with law enforcement.

3. Wasn't some US cardinal who died a number of years ago
accused by a man of having sexually abused him when he was a child? I bet the cardinal did it. I'll also bet a lot more of it went on than gets reported.

6. Got a link?
Lots of people were glad to accept hush money rather than report abuse.

5. It's definitely a job for law enforcement.
The Church hasn't had dungeons for centuries.

If a crime has been committed, it must be reported directly to the secular authorities. Questions will be asked--false accusations may be rare, but they do occur. But that is the only way you get criminals off the streets.

Of course, if you just complain the Bishop--you may get some money! Years later, after you realize the possible perpetrator was just moved elsewhere--you can sue for more money!

I know of one case in particular in which parishioners who knew about it took no responsibility whatsoever.

Of course, it's also possible that some tried and didn't get a positive reception from the cops. In any case, this went on for years, and the entire community is at fault. The guy is finally in jail, thank god.

Once when I was a kid, I was sexually propositioned and followed by some preppy creep in a sports car. My mother and I went to the police and were laughed at. Actually the cop called me a liar and mocked me.

You wonder how much more there is to these stories - I don't think we've heard it all.

4. Careful of witch hunts even here
I am against the death penalty except for pedophiles, however back in the day there was only one psychiatric clinic that everyone on Medicaid in the county had to go to and I was depressed but only because I had an undiagnosed illness for the previous five years and was not getting any medical help. In order to continue seeking medical help I had to go to the psychiatrist to prove I didn't need one.

The first therapist I saw kept hijacking the conversation to childhood abuse which never occurred in my case. When she did it during the second session warning bells went off and I asked to be assigned to someone else. Later that therapist (Humananski) was tried and convicted of forcing several women to say they had been abused as children and had repressed memories of it. If they did not she threatened to have them declared a danger to themselves and others and have their children taken away. She then proceeded to prescribe strong antipsychotics that were not indicated making the women even more ill and vulnerable and thus cementing her control over them.

So as much as I hate pedophiles we do need due process in these cases. Isn't it a step in the right direction for the church to act as though this is a crime instead of ignoring this behavior as in the past?
