Officials Say Girl Raped, Buried Alive
Jessica died of asphyxiation, according to a coroner's report. A convicted sex offender, John Evander Couey, 46, is charged in her slaying.

Officials said they believe Jessica may have been alive in Couey's home while police and volunteers searched for her. After she was killed, Couey fled to Georgia.

2. Normally I am the same, but this guy confessed to doing it.
So to me, it would not be a big deal if they put him down.

24. Yeah
and we've never seen a false or forced confession.

Ever.

I oppose the death penalty in all cases, because it's wrong for the government to take a life.

32. I don't want him to get the death penalty
I want him locked in a cell with the biggest most violent rapist in the prison system. I want that rapist to have a hefty bag and a roll of duct tape. I want this bastard to feel even one tenth of the terror and pain that little girl went through.

36. and if he's not guilty
Edited on Thu Apr-21-05 11:43 AM by youthere
he will be found such at the trial, and I'll pray they find the one who DID do it so they can suffer. And let me tell you as the mother of three young children (two of them daughters) I want the person who did this to experience every ounce of the terror and pain that child did. I can't,not in my wildest imagination, contrive an act more evil than what has been done here.
Maybe it's because I'm incredibly angry as I read this story and it's my rage talking, but this is absolutely how I feel about this.

but I have a feeling some of those inmates can come pretty close.
On edit:
I'm sorry, I have no ability to feel pity or mercy towards the perpetrator of this crime.

39. But
where does that leave us? Aiding and abetting in rape and torture?

The dark Side is seductive I know but it's this sort thinking that got us into the position of kids getting their faces shot off in Baghdad because they felt "somebody had to pay for 9/11"

6. No - just send him to a maximum security lock up
but let the general popluation know who he is and what he did.
i promise he would not last very long. Marion, San Quentan, Attica, or the Texas Dept of Corrections would do. you'd be better off dead.

Just like you said, child abusers and pedophiles don't last long in prison. They are hated more than murderers.

5. In college during the 1970's I opposed the death penalty.....
but cases like this, over and over and over again during the last 30 years have made me rethink my position. Death by injection is way too easy....asphixiation/live burial would be more appropriate.

alive when the police came to the house, but they didn't know that a registered sex offender was living in the house. I think when the police walk a neighborhood after an abduction like this they should take a dog with them.

I also think that sex offenders should be tracked by billing. Even though this guy moved without reporting as required, I doubt that he could have kept his location secret if his financial transactions were tracked. He could have been busted automatically for violating his parole.

As for that sick creep who did this to her. Let the Dad have at him, with no reprecussions whatsoever.

22. if a person
is going to commit then admit such a crime then they've obviously passed into a category of "wild animal" status having completely given in to the beast within and they need to be put down. I don't doubt that a lot of pedophiles are born, not made, and in theory they can't be blamed for their urges but there is still a line a man chooses to cross or not cross from human to animal and I don't think there's any rehabilitation for them once they do.

26. Curious
The report claims the child may have been alive in the Couey's home, suggesting the presence of a wife/partner? Yet everyone replies like it was a sole individual who was at fault.

Whatever. Anyone who harms a child like that, imho, deserves a rapid death, the same you would provide a faithful, but rabid, dog.

30. He was at his sister's house
And other people lived there. I'm sure they knew all about it. They even paid his bus ticket so he could escape, then lied to the cops. They are as guilty as if they themselves did it, IMO. Under Florida law, they can't really be charged with anyone. "Jessica's Law" actually changed that part of the Law. Florida government sucks, but I think they did something right here.

28. There truly are...
some crimes that are beyond the pale, and this is it. First and formost, as a parent, I want my child back alive. So I think punishment for assualt of a child should be up to life in prison no parole (depending on the severity of assualt). A case like this (ait tight) should be automatic death penality. I would want to do everything to insure my child comes back alive. We can deal with the psychological problems later.
Recivitism in this population is so high and therefore stricter measures must be enforce to protect the general population.

29. What got me was the stuffed dolphin
The one her Dad won for at at a fair a little while before she was abducted. The one she slept with. The one missing from the house. The one the Police found in her bound arms when they discovered her body. Did Jessica hold that little stuffed dolphin close to her as she suffocated to death in the Earth, thinking of her Daddy? Wondering is he would find her and save her? I cried when I read this last night.

I am against the death penalty, but I would like to kill this fucking scum right now. God, sometimes I am so glad I don't have kids. This breaks my heart just reading about a stranger's child.
